My mondeo TDC 130ps model had a really bad rattle on tickover , i thought it was the timing chain tensioner , its oil fed and when the engine picks up speed or is under load the rattle goes away

anyone had any similar problems or any direction of to what else it might be

thnk ill start with the tensioner as that seems te mor likely

Its standard issue..

They rattle like fuck.

My 03 plate one did it from 7k miles up till 84k when it went.

My mates 51 plate does it.

Sorry- when I say went- I got rid....

in fact I have a mate with a 54 plate car and his does it as well- he's had it since 10k.


ITs a fuckin horrible sound- I remember Redkop asked me if it was fucked before when I was over at Nutters once.

the sound is one of 2 things,

the duel mass flywheel or the bottom pully.

put the aux belt off and cheak out the bottom pully first, they are in 2 parts held togther with rubber and the rubber strches/ breaks up and the 2 meatel bit bang togther or the pully rubs on the timing belt cover.

if that looks ok, pull out the tdc sensor and see if it is covered in metal filings, if so its the duel mass flywheel.

i will if a can quieten it down a bit , its my taxi and im gettin p***ed of with smart arse paseengers "is this goin to make it" " your car sounds rough" "fan belt needs doing" ect ect ect ect

do they not relise that i spend an average of 600+ miles per week in ths thing and havent notised

its doesnt look like its been rubbing on the cover but ill check the pulley tommorow , soundslike its coming from the OS of the engine bay , thanks for the help though

i used to work for a rental company and we had loads of the 130ps tdci mondeos, it will never fuck compleatly unsess you driving it like you stole it.

evey single time someone brought one in for that noise it was one or the other of the above things,

I would put my money on it being the crank pulley/ damper.

According to the ford service bulletin, you wil most probably need the modified bottom pulley, tensioner and belt replacing

thats where my money is too, although quite a lot of high milers were duel mass flywheel.

you need to hear the sound really to make the best guess

can best describe it as a CVH with little or no oil in it on start up , or maybe a kent type with unadjusted tappets , mixed with a rattle

timing chain tensioners do fuck up, get it looked at by ford to make sure.

you really don't want the chain loosing tension and the chain slipping!

that means your knocking noise is the engine about to fall out onto the road

dual mass flywheel sounds like to me .
dip the clutch , if the noise gets softer you know you,ve found it .
done lots of the sodding things ! espiecally taxi's
give me a solid flywheel anyday ! my life was alot easier but less profitable

Changed the bottom pulley all nice n quiet now

it is a modified one looks totally different too the one i took off

My Zetec S does this as well. Only had chance to have one listen and it seemed to be coming from the alternator area, just thought it was getting a bit noisy. Looks like mine has this problem

It's just the suspension that is different on the Zetec S is'nt it ? Are'nt the engines the same on the TDCi models ? Don't know much about mondys
Just started mine before and it started fine but made a hell of a noise from this area and would'nt rev at all. What would this point to ?

I was gonna go for a Ghia for the spec but the missus wanted the ZS cos they sit lower and look more sporty. Wanted the ST ideally but a bit pricey for us with the kids. We need to sort this noise out on the ZS and it will be bob on. Pulls well for a diesel and drives like a dream but the main thing is the room for the kids. Also the airbags everywhere give us piece of mind as we would'nt have stood a chance in the S1 in a serious accident I hate being sensible but the kids come 1st. . . for now

i know the mondeos were chain driven but i though the zs had a belt driven peugeot engine hence with the bottom pully doesn't fuck up as often as the mondeo one.

no saying the french one is better becasue they blow out the injector seals the second they get over 120k

mines just done its first 12 hour stint out on the mean streets and it went without a hick up im still a bif fan of chasing chavs in there 1. nothing hatches always shocks them they cant keep up with a diesel estate taxi

Can you just change the bottom pulley on it's own or do you need to do the belt anfd tensioner?

Not sure, i've only ever changed all of the parts as this is the recognised ford repair for the warranty claim.

You could try it though, if it works, you've saved yourself a few quid!

i just changed the bottom pulley , doesnt seem to have effected anything else , tho i did spend about 20 mins trying to remember how the belt was routed

i attempted this today. thought i would renew all three, belt, pulley & tension. reason is seen as how i have it apart, may as well. the cars done 56,000 and the belt does look like it is on it's last legs. pulley is fcuked. tensioner? dunno, maybe it's ok but i've bought a new one anyway.

didn't appriciate how difficult it would be. how did you release tension on the belt? can't get any of my tools in to turn the tensioner clock-wise.

how about removing the tensioner? none of my allen keys will fit in the space provided?

didn't realise that the belt won't come off without undoing the tensioner.

taking the pulley of was a piece of piss, then i noticed the crank shaft oil-seal was leaking....have you ever wished you hadn't started a job

Hi mate, easiest way to do it is to undo or remove the roll restrictor on the gearbox (the mount that connects the subframe to the gearbox), put a jack or an axle stand under the sump, remove the engine mount from the drivers side of the car and then pull the engine forward as far as it will go. This will give you a lot more room to play with. Personally, i have ground down an allan key to shorten it so that it will fit in the gap between the tensioner and inner wing. As for releasing the tensioner, there is a square hole on the tensioner that a 3/8 drive ratchet should fit. I'd make a note of how the belt goes before you remove it though, took me ages to work it out on the first one i did! lol
