Wimp!
Go get a R1. You know you want to. Remeber the early ones are less powerful than a K5 Suzook.
I would suggest you go take your test first before you start picking matching leathers.

Testing the future
i would guess that the terms and conditions state that not if it's your first bike, or less than x years riding, or x years NCB. can't imagine that they'll insure a bike virgin for Ł99 on anything, let alone one of those

I had an o2 plate R1 & loved it - you couldn't beat the power especially as soon as you dialed 8k in ! She flew !
Then got a Gixxer thou K4 & OMG the difference ! Had K&N filter, Yoshi can & Power Commander. Made 158hp @ the wheel & the Power Commander took out the 186mph limiter. I did 192
Loved that bike, nothin about it I didn't like & so easy to ride slow.
Want a K5 now but not sure if I'll get one as lost a very close friend recently & I got family etc

Can a Cossie outrun an R1- not unless you have massive bhp
Lots of talk on this Topic so now lets quote a few facts.
Got the R1 times from the web.
R1 ---------------------------------800bhp Cosworth
0-60 3.0 ------------------------------------ 0-60 4.1
0-100 6.0 ---------------------------------- 0-100 6.9
0-150 11.6 ---------------------------------- 0-150 12.7
60-100 3.0 ---------------------------------- 60-100 2.8
100-150 5.6 --------------------------------- 100-150 5.8
60-150 8.6 ----------------------------------- 60-150 8.6
Must have a go in a Stage 3 Cossie that can out acclerate that, mine does well evens from 60-150. So you will need 800bhp in a rwd Cossie to run with the R1 , mind you my 0-180 is many seconds quicker than the R1 & I cant find its 0-200 anywhere .
ps. Modify the R1 & it will piss over mine as well, they are fast lads.

The latest R1 is around 20 secs from 0-180mph. LAtest ZX10R recorded 17 seconds. ( for ref)

Fuckin hell chop, any need to be like that man, a bike is only fast if you let it be, and whats to say I might "LEARN" a little bit quicker than you, IMO and the blokes in the bike shop I spoke to today, they actually said they hand on heart dont know any man this side of a pro rider who can honestly say theyve opened an R1 up totally, does that mean all us mere mortals are forbidden to buy one FFS
I knew all the usual suspects would come on and say "oh you cant have a fuckin R1 as your 1st,get a 6 instead, well to tell you the truth I dont wanna fuckin R6 I wanna R1, I didnt ask you to come on the thread and tell me if you cant or wont ride one then I cant , I asked for peoples opinions on them, not on how I would or wouldnt fare on one

AN R1 is a great choice of bike.
There are lots of version to chose from. The early versions although slower, have a great engine. 98-04 (I think) are approx 25-30 bhp down on the later 04-08 versions. (with underseat exhaust)
THe older models have arguably a better engine for the road, they are longer stroke and have more power/torque below 8000rpm. the later version are very short stroke and rev 2500-3000rpm higher. Obviously the handling of the newer machines are better, but as a new rider this handling advantage would be wasted on you, even me and I can shift with a bike faster than most.
Here are some numbers for you.
98-03 .................................................. ............- 04-08
crank power 150-155bhp @ 10000rpm crank power 170-186bhp @13,000rpm
(all ave with pro rider @ 60kgs)
0-100 5.8 .............. 5.5
0-130 9.00............. 8.00
0-150 12.5 ............ , 10.50
0-170 18.00 ............ , 4.50
0-180 n/a .................., 20.00
Get an R1 if you want, it is your choice. Tho to be honest even an R6 is a bad idea for a new rider. It's not so much the bike that is the problem, but the pilot,,kind like the motto, guns don't kill people, people do, tho a bigger gun will do more damage) If you can behave yourselve on the bike, learn slowly, then you should be fine tho this is how goes for most new riders. You get the R1, for the first month or so you will scared shitless of the power. A little while after that, you will start to get confident on the bike, and at some point will think that you are better than you really are, and one day you will get yourself into a situation where you do not have the experience to get out of it. The problem with a faster bike is that they go faster, and get you faster into trouble. Of coures you may be an exception to the rule, and (I was, as I started on a TL1000S as a 1st big bike, this bike was known as the Widomaker) and you may be smart and can ignore the red mist when it decends but trust me, it is hard to not be a dick on a bike when going fast is just a few mm of twist on the throttle.
If you do get an R1, bere sure to make good biker friends, pick and choose the right ones, becuase if you ride with a bunch of idiots then you will likely become one too, and without the experience, you will end up as paste on the road.
You will be fine on an R1, providing you take your time before you up the speed... remember, you go too hot into a corner, you can't just hit the brakes like in a car and let the ABS do the rest, on a bike, if you got any kind of lean, and hit the brakes, you are down, tho when you have some years behind you, you can use the front brake to an extent even if cranked over.
Go with your heart, but just take it easy, do some bike advance bike courses, and even take it to the track.

As said above, the new R1 is considererably slower than its competition when talking 0-180mph. As MadRod said, his 800bhp cossie runs more or less the same times as an R1 0-150, (not sure what year bike the times he quoted were for though), but the R1 seems to struggle a bit after 150. The GSXR1000 and ZX10R are a fair bit quicker than the R1 0-180.
Ive copy and pasted this from what i posted in the 500bhp cossie v R1 thread from yesterday..................
Some more figures that are very interesting to show how quick the newer bikes are..........
Unlike what many non-bikers seem to think, the R1's are not the daddy of bikes anymore like they used to be 10 years ago with little competition. There are quicker bikes out there now, although were not talking mega differences on the road as theres not many times youll actually do a 0-180.......
08' GSXR 1000 - 0-180mph in 18.51 seconds
08' ZX1400 - 0-180 in 19.77 seconds
08' Hayabusa - 0-180mph in 18.25 seconds
08' R1 - 0-180mph in 21.07 seconds
08' ZX10R - 0-180mph in 17.21 seconds!!!!!!!!
As an example, the Veyron does 0-180 in 16.4-16.7 seconds, so not 'much' quicker than a new ZX10R!
Also, that saff thats got the top speed record does 0-180mph in 17.82 (or did end of last year anyway), so your going to need similar power/performance to this to keep with the modern bikes.
Quite amazing really for stock bikes, and bear in mind that MANY of these bikes will be modified and probably have even more power and less weight too!!!

Stats taken from cycleworld.
According to Road and track - veyron is a tad slower then that to 180mph. road and track measure 16.4 to 170mph. Of course conditions may have not been perfect.

Check the above links
And as mentioned above, allot of these stock bikes will be modded, some with full systems and PC111's, which can net you 10-20bhp dependent on what bike. That BHP increase may not sound allot, but it's like giving a car an extra 100bhp.

ah sorry, was looking at getting a cosworth at some stage and came accross these old threads, just got reading, and found it refreshing to read a bike vs car thread that does not disolve in to chaos and handbag slapping
