Kit Cars - YB'd or turbo'd in general.....
like the Caterham/Westfield type cars
what are these like to drive? are they just ballistic fun, or are they a nightmare?
say with around 350bhp...

it does...although i'd expect 0-60 to be quicker than that 
always wanted one...haven't seriously considered it yet...but i could be tempted

4.5 is a guess on this car, ive seen them do 3.3 though, depends on driver and spec

To compair, me and my dad are in the final stages of building a tiger cat E1, looks the same as the green car above but cheaper,
with standard sierra running gear, type 9 gearbox with 1.8 zetec with bike carbs, this will do 0-60 in 5.5 secs roughly, its a grip issue as its light weight and unless you can launch it cleanly it just spins the wheels,
there good as a summer or sunny day car, although my dad has meet a guy whos done over 25k in his kitcar in the years he has owned it. they can get a hood for rainy days and my kitcar has a heated windscreen getting fitted so should help demisting if needed

Drove my bruv in laws MK Indy home from a meeting last night,great fun
R1 bike engine in his,6 speed sequential gearchange without using the clutch is awesome on accelaration
Is geared for around 130 mph at 14,000 rpm
Cosworth powered ones must be a right handfull.
The bike engine/gearbox makes his a nice little toy,built for accelaration and handling,rather than top end speed.
Easily faster than a 2.0 16v XE Vaux powered Westfield on throttle bodies which was rolling roaded at just over 200bhp

There was a guy who used to come on here/turbo sport - I think called Daz.
He had one... I believe grip was an issue to get a good 0-60.... but the rest was phenominal.....

PS- I remember him also posting up about a certain D reg sierra that he tried to race in the Lester (spelling) and COVENTRY area and was quite suprised to find that it Pissed on him - where as normally he destroyed cossies.

i really cant rememeber who it was, and cant remember wether i sold through rsoc forum, or pf,....yep,..it was that long ago...
but someone came with a van with his dad to buy my complete but not built...
brand new 200 block, fully refurbished and big valved cossie head, new pstons/rings etc....crank....and full stage 3 set up....
all gaskets injectors map sensor oil pump etc etc, etc,, all brand new...
everything needed for 330 bhp...
was going in a westfield iirc....
if its you...(whoevers reading this) drop me a pm to tell me how it went,...

If your really interested in a seven style kitcar id suggest having a ganders here www.locostbuilders.co.uk everything you could want to know or ask about owning or building a seven style car. the main cars on there are locosts, MK indys, haynes roadster, stuart tylor and a few with westfields and caterhams. Most on the site have built there cars from scratch including the chassis, and theres a huge range of engines you can fit from 900cc bike engines to big ass V8s. well worth a look.

They can be a right handful once you start pushing the power. Mine is probably around the 450 BHP mark and is great fun. On track its quite hard work after a few full chat laps.
You do need to look out for strength in the chassis though. Mines a Westfield so at the better end of quality and the power and torque my produces cracked the diff cage on the rear.
Traction can be a problem and taller gearing helps here. Also fitting a big turbo helped as it gives more a progressive power then a smack in the arse you get from a T3/T34.
Last thing to worry about is ACTS as you dont have much room for intercooling.
Ive come up against most problems with YB's in this type of car so fire away if you have anymore questions.

John Felstead who used to have the late reg white 2wd Sapphire on here had a YB-powered Westfield some time after. He'd be a good person to ask as he's a very good driver as well as a nice bloke. He lurks over on Scoobynet more now though

4wd and mapped by MSD. it weighs 800kg and when compared to bike engines cars there is a significant weight penalty. also the bike engined cars obviously have instant power available. On a track etc yb power rules (except for hyabusa powered cars)

I'm definately going to build myself a kit car in the near future, just deciding which kit and engine i.e bike or car ,to go for!
not really decided a budget but it will be built on a budget and seems pointless building a big power yb or zetec turbo etc and putting it in a shit chassis, havent seen the quality of the mk's etc so cant comment yet i guess, we'll see!
