dude i done it a couple of times, last time on my downhill bike!!!
is a long old ride but once you get to brighton its all worth it
watch out for the hill at the end tho, its about 2-3 miles up (quite steep too) but then you get to go down it and thats a lot of fun. i clocked up 60mph and that was on dirt tyres that were only running about 35psi so proper slick tyres i wouldnt even like to think what speed i'd have got
you doing it for charity or just for the craic?

I did it on that......slicks at 50 psi. Managed 48 mph on the hill. Whoever said 60 on soft knobblies is a dreamer lol I couldnt do that on my racing bike!
Its a tough day IF its hot, make sure you have plenty to snack on and make sure you stop and take on water whenever possible. No point being macho and running out of steam before the end
Its VERY satisfying cruising into Brighton it'self when you're nearly there
Good Luck

I've done it several times but this was about 15 years ago
Great ride, like previously said it's hard work when the sun is beating down but well worth it. Ditchling Beacon is hard to cycle up considering you'll have passed 45+ miles so far. If you decide to take it on it's quite doable but the people walking up make it hard work as they wont look at what is coming up behind them. Be careful on the run into Brighton as previously stated you can clock up decent speed. seen a few accidents on this route before and this is not a place to have one.
Not sure where you're starting from these days in London but my advise is start early, and you bike is in tip top condition and serviced And dont try and stop at every pub you pass it dont work too well

you could hit 30 on certain parts of downhill courses so i think 60 on a road is do-able, esp when you see the size of that hill and how straight it is
anyway back to the topic now of dave doing this for charity. if you wanna debate pm me

Its pretty easy to be fair - I would do it again this year, but I think it falls on the weekend of le Mans!
One bit of advice - get some PROPER tyres.... - not m/bike knoblies, but some 1" slicks.. - it will make the ride much more enjoyable!
Also, may be worth buying a bell to warn people that you are comming through - When i've done it, it has always been mega busy, despite getting a 7.30 start - God only knows what it would be like with a 9am start

Have done this twice and is a good challenge to start with
60mph, that is 100kph or near enough to it! I was racing down a mountain with a some mates about a year ago over here and on a long straight with full slicks got 85kph on my mountain bike which is an XC'er! Not only was it ridiculously scary but so damn fast! 100kph on a mountain bike with low psi and knobblies on that hill, would have to see it to believe it
Bike speedos are notoriously inaccurate especially on a mountain bike that has dirty connectors/magnet.
Check the Tour De France top speeds too which are pro racers, on a proper mountain, light bike, full aerodynamics too

no the sppedo was bought for that hill, i set it up on the top of the beacon
i wouldnt be seen dead on my bike at a downhill course with a speedo
i agree with riding with slicks tho, they'd defo make it a much quicker and less tiring 70 odd miles lol
as Rolls put a bell might be a good idea but not the most important thing you need. just be aware as it is busy on the roads

I was pushing a 48 - 12 gear combo on 1 inch slicks at 50 psi.
48mph and a flash of the camera

fook coming off on the hill at the end at 40+ mph.....
I hit about 45mph according to my speedo, and a friend who races for Evans went past me like i was standing still.....
Anyhow.... Back on topic - Have you got the bike already Dave?

Done it once many moons ago................. The only thing i can remember about it is some old doris knocking me into some cone & flying arse over tit.........
And secondly & more importantly that bloody hill just outside of Brighton!! I was so hot we ended up walking it!
BUT............As others have mentioned the fun part is coming back down the hill!

it took us a good 4-5 hours, simply due to the number of people on the road.. - if you want to post a good time, aim to get to the starting post at 6am... But then you will get to brighton at about 9, and miss the whole atmosphere IMO...
