hey im only thinking cause its here,,,, its a bit like going out on the pull to look for a new bird when you got a bird at home,,,,,,,, if its there why not use that rather than waste money on a uncertain chance
the 2.5 engine sounds tempting now,,,,, im only ment to be buying it as a cheep toy,,,,,, infact ive not even bought one yet and im looking at prices of modding the thing
well who needs a social life

Yes.... it's ok, but again.... things have moved on.
My TOTALLY standard twin scroll turbo on the Spec C made 368bhp and 350lbft on normal pump fuel on a standard engine with replacement panel filter and exhaust. Turbo produced 1bar @ 2600rpm and 1.6bar 3200 rpm..... peak power at 7k.
With all the turbo's available for a Subaru, nothing about a T34 would make it worth while putting it on.

Ginge,
The pipework alone would make it a royal pain in the arse. I have just gone through the same thing with mine (fitting a turbo that was not OE fit), the fabrication has been a nightmare and this is still in standard position and not rotated (yet lol).
What sort of power you looking at?

fagin comming from a bloke whos drive a few fast cossies
does a 350bhp scoobie feel slow compared to a 2wd cossie ?
strange question i know and im not talking about the erst " feels like im going back in time even though im doing 90 cause parts of the car aree falling off" fast but on a " this is fun to drive and holds the power up till i decide to change gear"
another way to describe what i mean is a stage 3 cossie with a T3 feels fast going to the shops/impressing school girls but i found em to be gutless when reved and would NEVER own one cause of it
that make sence i hope

Ginge - if you do go through an engine...
We have got a low mileage built engine at work that we took out of a car we'd done after the driver parked into something a bit more solid than the car
Was running 500bhp territory 4 years ago
It's all still complete and didn't suffer in the bump - sat on an engine stand at the moment...
Dare say it'd sell for a reasonable offer

i didnt get the last one nicked,,,,, someone just fucking nicked it
if i do get one ( and ive seen a fucking too good a deal on ebay,,,,, but im trying not to rush buy this time) then im gonna clear that fucking escort tennis cabrio out the garage and scrap every ford part in my garage so i can keep the scoobie locked away,,,,,, and theres about 20 alloy wheels and 4 trims in the garage aswell as lots of other shite
iain how would you compare the power of the sti to a 2wd cossie running a t34 reving,,, as in does the car keep pulling ?
also any piccys of it as no doubt it will be forsale soon knowing you

Ginge,
Having briefly read your posts, you're already contemplating the mods that cause them to blow in the first place .
People treat them like Cossies and put an aftermarket exhaust and filter on as the first mods, rag the shit out of them and then wonder why they let go .
The standard exhaust system IS extremely restrictive (hence why gains of 30bhp can be seen by changing it), BUT the boost curve fuelling and ignition has been set up for that exact same restrictive exhaust, so unless these are ammended (as the spool up is also DRAMATICALLY effected by basically removing three cats etc) to suit the new exhaust's dramtic change in spool up characteristics, the car WILL melt if used aggressively.
This is where the Scoobies get their unfair reputation for chocolate engines from - big exhausts, no re-maps. Just like Cossies get the same rep for unreliability (poor maintenance, incorrect fuelling). Same with Jap spec car's, they're nearly ALWAYS fitted with a huge exhaust, people forget the quality of fuel available in Japan, as well as the fact that the car's are restricted to 117mph. In Japan, they can therefore get away with running big exhausts and no remap, as the car never get's to high enough load for it to become a problem.
Bring them over here, de-limit them, drive them hard, bang. The myth perpetuates - Scoobies have chocolate engines .

i have no pics off it yet but i think it may already be sold you know what i am like
but the one i have is 350 bhp and is mapped properlly for the mods that are on

mike ive already spoke to stu about a live map,,,,, the FIRST thing i would do is book it in for him to check the fueling,,,, im too poor and hes prices are too cheep NOT to have that done ( and besides he always gives me a pretty folder to tell me all the problems with the car )
im looking into not having a slow 4wd toy if that makes sence, ive been thinking of buying another cossie since the last one got nicked but the idea of spending 5k on a 20 year old car and spend the rest of my life chasing rust ect,,,,, just seems a stupid idea to me, though it made sence when i owned a cossie
4k on a car that the missus aproves off ( meaning shes gonna fund part of it ) and its a car ive wanted for a while,,,, just sounds a winning plan.
just dont wanna buy one and find they are slow,,, as in my bmw does 140mph, it goes sideways, its got aircon BUT and this is the big thing,,,, its slow, dont pin me back in the seat, power comes in too late and then i bounce it off the limiter
was thinking about a supercharger/turbo conversion, thought about a 4.4 v8 conversion
but REALITY keeps popping in there,,,, why pay 4k on a car worth 1500 quid when i could just buy a car for 4k
everyone is saying get a e34 M5,,,, not the car for me and cant jusify getting a loan out to buy a e39 M5,,,, considering when the loan would be paied off the car wont be worth the interest ( you know what i mean)
so a scooby seems a safe(ish) bet,,,, providing the power is there and lot of people claim it is but then my version of fast aint the same as others, i like to accelerate on motorways as if im driving kitt not have a car thats quick to 110ish then feel,,,,,,, slow

A Classic Scoob with a remap and exhaust WILL feel slow on the open road - slow as in small turbo Escort slow - punchy down the bottom end, good around town and back-roads, but slow, tedius and asmatic above 5500rpm, where the 'ickle turbo just can't deliver anymore go.
Saying that, you don't need that push in the seat to be fast from A - B. On twisty country roads, it would stay with a Cossie (4wd) which had 30-40bhp more, and a 2wd one wouldn't see it for dust.
Also, if the 400bhp Cossie has a misfire, he will get TOASTED by a mere 240 bhp Scooby - just ask Nash .

Harvey doesn't know anything about Scoobs . The STi one is the usual upgrade, so go for the turbo that is on the Sti version of the year of car you end up with. Should be good for around 320bhp correctly mapped.
If you can stretch to the first of the new age cars, these are much better built, have superior ECUs (that can be easily flashed) and much easier to tune.
Here's ours - 240bhp / 260lb ft (Prodrive performance pack on a standard 218bhp WRX).

They look better with the Morettes though .
I don't think you'll like it then, as compared to a 350bhp Cossie, they're slow, but as a car to live with, a Scooby is leagues ahead.

Owning a scoob i might be able to give a bit of advice. I've recently had mine on a rolling road, and stupidly i didn't find out the reputation of the establishment beforehand. Now my backbox was a mess, it was old and you could see the baffles were coming out, so i checked with them and they said it was fine.
About 20 minutes after i left they phoned to say the backbox had exploded all over their dyno, could i go and pick it up. I was quite embarassed, and got probably one fo the weirdest dyno graph's i've ever seen. When on the phone they said there was not much they could do, but were "looking" at the ECU i had fitted. It was a Z4 ecu which fits straight onto a 94WRX like mine without any problem, and its a very common upgrade for the year, without any complications.
The Techie was very critical saying the AFR was all over the place, but i've seen remapped scoobs with a very similar AFR line. He reccomended i change to an Apexi Ecu which funnily enough they stock, and they basically asked me in front of 3 other techies why i had fitted it in the first place like i was a tw@.
Anyways, the backbox was now full of loose baffle, which obviously meant under power it popped and farted and so i have avoided driving it. So i sourced a new backbox and also a decat centre pipe, but guess what the popping and farting is still there.
You could put this down to a lot of things, like the coilpacks which are poo and need replacing every so often as they crack. But and its a big but the popping and farting started as soon as i dropped the car off. I'm starting to wonder what exactly they did when they were "looking" at my ECU.....
As i've said coilpacks are an issue, if its an STI make sure its an STI as sooo many people whack badges on them, Usually identified by the red manifold or a plate on the drivers side opposite the VIN plate. Depending onthe year check that its converted to MPH, otherwise you'd be limited to 112MPH and alos check the stereo has been converted too.
For quick mod's a backbox, Decat centre and downpipe as well as a panel filter (induction kits i've heard can create issues) and obviously a decent remap by a decent mechanic can add a lot as well as make it sound like Sarah Harding flicking the bean.
Scoobynet is ok for buying stuff on the cheap but basically is half decent people who will help you and half idiots who are just looking for an arguement. I avoid it myself now.
There should be a local scoobie club near you there's 2 near me in Sussex, you'll probably find them a lot friendlier.
Oh and don't crucify me for owning a scoob, i love my cars (inc fords) and i'm a member of a lot of non-scooby forums. Hope this helps.

I can't remember offhand that many m8 and i lost a brilliant site with them all listed from my favourites. It's worth asking on scoobynet all i can remember is Z4 obviously and a 2C came on mine standard.

Ginge,
Dont ask Mike Rainbird about Scoobs..... he aint got a fucking clue!!!!
As I said before it depends on what power you are after and whether your engine is a 2ltr or 2.5ltr, but as a general rule of thumb (and also assuming the engine is not a newage jap twin scroll one)...
TD04 Hybrid ~ 320bhp - £650 outright
TD05 18g Hybrid ~ 375bhp - £850 outright
TD05 20g Hybrid ~ 400bhp - £850 outright
All the above are suitable to standard engine internals.
ECU wise (again dependant on the year) stick with standard and use ECUTEK to program it with. If it's prior to 99 you have to use something else like a APEXI.
Rhys,
Not yet...... it may be back on the road Saturday. The fabrication work has been a pain in the arse.

The TD04's on classics i believe are used on the "down on power" UK turbo's and the Wagon's whereas JDM WRX's like mine use the TD05, I'm not sure of the "g" though. I'm not sure whats used on the later models.
For £2500 you should be able to pick up a clean example of a JDM WRX starting around the '94 mark, which as standard iirc are 230bhp (or ps near as dammit). Mine started off like this.....
Now looks like.....
Note the "Sti" badges lol.
