close the valve at both ends. loosen the nuts. get a mate if it is a big rad get a mate to help. then quickly undos the nuts, lift off the brackets and turn up side down.
only if you have no carpet on the floor or it will need to be drained down

As a DIY'er, I remove the Thermostat and screw a cap on there (to close that valve off. Then I close the Lockshield valve. Now the rad is isolated from the rest of the system.
I then place blankets on the floor and undo the Nut on one end of the rad, draining the water into a paint tray (empty it into a bucket when it gets full), and so on.
Then, once most of the water is gone, you can put your thumb over that end of the rad, before undoing the other end. If you put a tray under the other end before you undo it, and tip that rad up you can avoid losing the rest of the water, before carrying it outside.

You can take rads off the wall without draining the system..................
However if something goes wrong you are fooked big time!
Personally I would spend the extra time draining to the system FULLY and then remove the rad.
If you are going to have the rad off the wall for some time and need the central heating on in the mean time then place some stoppers on the rads pipes (push fit plastic item are nice and easy) and refill system, bleed all rads. Of course you will need to drain the system again to refit the rad.

For a DIY'er thats very good,
The only difference to when I do it is, I would not bother to drian it into the paint tray, If you are quick you can usual put your thumb over the ends or if its big then one person at each end, Then take it outside or to an inside drain and empty.
But for a "virgin" rad. remover your explanation is spot on
