theres a couple of variants.........170bhp and 190bhp ones iirc

spec is wide and varied

highlines are ones to go for

but very thirsty and very lazy engines

wouldnt be that good a choice for a daily runner.......

that was the area i didnt listen to my mate who is a vw man

i think if its "just a vr6" golf in gti guise its 170bhp but if its highline its 190bhp.

I had one lasted 3 weeks before I sold it. I got very bored with it- but the engine noise is awesome.

Buy the lowest mileage best one you can. The engines will go on for 250k if looked after properly.
Headgaskets are expensive if need replacing- strong as fuck unless kaned from cold.

Anything before 95 P ( I think its around then) will have rusty tailgate and prob bottoms of doors- everything after is Galvansied so no probs.

DONT buy a gaylord Highline- horrid colours with horrid matching leather and yuk wheels. Std car comes with nice BBS as standard.

Horse power is around 180 I think. and loads of low down grunt.

Stop and go well.

19-22mpg is about right and down to 13 on a kaning session.

Beware of the ABS- it is the biggest problem on it and an MOT issue if the light doesn't do what its supposed to. THe wheel sensors are between 50-70 quid - ecu is ŁŁŁ's and people can spend a lot of money tracing faults. My own car had an intermitant problem- the light just stayed on when it wanted.

If you get a good one it will hold its value.

I paid 3500 for a 68k P plate standard car 2 owners and sold it for 3700.

Golf VR6 was 174bhp 2.8 - Highline was trim changes - engine was same ...unless someone has changed it

Corrado VR6 was 192bhp 2.9

my mates got a mark 3 vr6 and its really quick!

saw one a while ago that must of been about 400bhp - 500bhp. its was shockingly fast!!

The Corrados handle a lot better as standard than the Golf

Wheel sensors are Ł18.50 from German and Swedish. My wife had a mark 3 VR6 and although it was thirsty it's a good cruiser and all round nice car. On a reasonable run you'll the mpg in the high 20s and she used to get low 30s sometimes

Golf VR6s are now very cheap to pick up but beware that the early ones without coil packs had problems with the heads so only look at something on an L plate or newer. Also beware that at 100k the timing chains can fail and because VW put the chain on the gearbox end of the engine getting them replaced isn't cheap Corrados still fetch Ł5k for a decent one.

i always thought you got 2.9 highlines. most of em are advertised as 2.9s?

Ahhh they wern't when I had mine- but my main point was it can be a problem with the ABS and all the research I did said it was an issue.

bout 4 years ago when i had a stage 2 xr2i, i raced one and beat him stayed with him in a straightline and over over him round bends

his brother came up2 me coupla days later to ask abotu my car as he was with him and couldnt beleived i beat him

I have a Vr6 great car, i dont find it too bad on juice at all...and i find it perfoms really well...sounds awesome, i have a M reg totally standard in Aubergine best colour imo, no rust on tailgate or doors ect... Engines do sound sweet, i got told about the abs as well so checked when i got mine and it works fine.

Here's some info on the Golf Highline

"In late 1995 VW launched the Golf VR6 Highline, a limited edition based on the standard car but only available in two colours, the normal Diamond Black Metallic and the very unusual Purple Violet which has never been used on any other UK VW. Both came with air conditioning as standard and matching leather interiors. Yes that does mean purple leather but thankfully it was very dark and not that garish. The carpets were also a dark purple and came with matching overmats - thankfully the dash was black though. A wooden gear knob was standard and other little tweaks were the body coloured tailgate spoiler, the smooth rear VW badge, smaller 'VR6' badges, the higher rear section of the centre console (also used on the Vento VR6) and extra door seals. An oddity of the Highline is that it doesn't come with the plastic sill covers fitted to all other VR6's. All VR6's lost the wheel arch trims in October 1995 when the side repeaters were changed to an oval clear lense but some early Highlines pre-dated this and have the rectangular orange lenses."

Had the same 174bhp 2.8 engine as the std Golf VR6 - that's not to say that someone hasn't put a bigger version in ...

I just got my mate to plug it in to the diagnostic port and it told me which sensor was down. Changing it was an arse though and I obliterated the old one into about 50 bits before it'd come out

My mates got a vr6 that hes selling. he gets upto about 34mpg from it and it was dyno'ed at 194bhp.

Owned a mk2 golf with a corrado 2.9 vr6 in it and to be honest was just as good on petrol as the cossie and better than the cossie if hard on it.Great runner,always started no probs etc and the handling is out of this world but it was fully poly bushed coilovers etc etc.If i was to buy another vr it would be the corrado itself or maybe get a golf but only if it was tuned a bit and suspension changed as its like a boat standard.Once u get a dub you will be hard pushed to get rid tbh.Great cars and well built

never driven a st200 so can't comment but the standard st24 is no where near as good as a vr6. Personally i love the purple highlines with the purple interior, it does look really smart in the metel.

I was sure the highlines were 2.9 though?

Me mate had a mk2 golf, metallic green in colour with a corrado front end headlight conversion... was bloody rapid, with NOS, but he killed it, and nearly himself, when he rolled it up at a cruise one night street racing.

Yip only corrado's were 2.9 and suffered from heat soak due to the overbore of the 2.8 block.More torque etc so better in long run imo but a good tuned late spec golf with obd2 is quicker than a 2.9

Had an early coil model on a K plate, and at night the dizzy lit up like fireworks night where the cap and plug leads were breaking down
A common thing for the non coil pack im told.
They do sound awesome on the move
Keep an eye out for smokey one's though, on the over run a number of them chuck out blue smoke.And you know what that means
Beware those with miss fires,theres plenty around !!

a mate had a 3dr L reg vr6, 190 000 miles on the original engine. leaked water but y golf 1.4 did aswell and it was mint when i bought it. general problem.

look after them or buy one wich has been looked after and it serves u well.

I had a VR6 Corrado - thought it was crap, heavy on teh front and not very nice to drive.

Mates G60 Corrado is much nicer but it's got polys, konis and is just a much lighter and nicer driving car.

Nothing else sounds like it either!

I used to have a VR6 Corrado, loved it too bits, I've owned a few cars in my time and the Corrado was perhaps one of my favourites. Only problem was it got nicked after about six months, then I discovered motor bikes so never had another.

I've also owned an ST24 and ST200, both nice cars but not a patch on the Corrado. I'd love another Corrado but they seem to hold their money.

Yip thats if they still work common problem with them not workin remotly ended up having to operate them ureself haha.

My Mk2 VR beat standard cossie no probs in sayin that it beat golf vr's aswell without any trouble haha.

Love the vr engine,smooth delivery of power and endless torque just keeps wantin to go and go.had mines up at 150 a few times all on a test track officer
