Ok all you dog owners
Me and the misses are moving soon and we would like a puppy,
Thsi would be our first dog we have owned, and in may sometimes be at home by it self whilst we at work.
What would be a good breed of dog to look at,
I like Huskys and German shepards, whilst the misses likes chocolate labradors ?

German Shephard, mine is 18 months old from puppy and he is a pain in the arse but I wouldn't swap him for the world. Just becareful because all of the pedigree breeds have an increased risk of his dysplasia (spelling).

I will be in the same boat very soon.... as in the missus wants a dog when we buy a house... She wants a relatively small, easy maintenance dog thats not too lairy - i said fook off get a staffi or something!!! She likes the Bichon Frise??? (little white fluffy thing). Baring in mind its for both of us and I know ill look a proper queer walking the rat but what are they like as house dogs. We both work in the City so it will be left alone for around 8 hours a day during the week (ive told her its out of order but she thinks it will be fine). Do they take well to this?

Any puppy no matter what breed is gonna proper munch your house up if left alone . Best thing to do is put them in the kitchen or something where they cant wreck anything. After a while they will get used to being alone and just chill out and sleep
Or you could get a rescue dog thats already trained and used to being left alone. Personally id get a rescue dog as id rather give a dog a home that really needs it than buy one. Almost all the dogs we have had were strays my mums picked up or not wanted by someone we know.
this is Alfie our little hairy jack russel with our shetland Marbles
and this is Kipper who is half whippet and sheep dog we think.

Thats vin my bullmastiff...
Not sure i'd go with one as a 1st dog, although he's alright with one walk a day etc and doesn't need as much attention as say a german shepherd they're very stubborn. Took me a lot of training with him to get him to listen properly, he's well behaved but the Bull breed in him still there and he's VERY protective around other dogs and people.
Great with the cat though
Good luck whatever you get though, can;t imagine my life without a dog now

Just be aware that a German Shepherd must be one of the worst dogs to own when it comes to moulting!
This is just the hair from one hind leg of my dog from one combing and they moult twice a year for approx 3 weeks each moult and also lose hair throughout the year continually.

Here's my Bo when we first got him at 8 weeks old
And how he is now at 2yrs old
Personally if your gonna get a dog and leave it for hours on end everyday from a pup then ide get a cage to save it chewing anything, but leave it plenty of toys to play with and a water bowl aswell.Get the largest cage you can get your hands on then it'll do it a good few years aswell until he's fully trained.
Also as a first dog i probably wouldnt get a German Shephard but at the end of the day its up to you and the girl but be ready for plenty of walks, training and ALOT of brushing!!

dobermans, rottweilers and natural gaurd/working dogs can be fine left alone but when very young you cant leave them for too long only coz you gotta feed them a few times a day but one they're over 6 months it becomes easier. also alot of pups will destroy things especially when they dont have enough toys to chew... leave him in the kitchen or as i do in the garden... he loves it.
i know most people will say they're not first time dog owners breeds but if you canbe dominant, asertive, and when no means no i think you could have these dogs along with a very good understanding of wolf pack behaviour coz the same applies to doggies.
my first dog is a rottie, he's 6months and is as obidient as anything.....
breeder only sold him to me coz i had a very good understanding of dogs and i was prepeared to travel 400miles and pay Ł700 when i could have travelled 6miles and pay Ł350.

Hey up,
any dog is going to be hard work,
labs are good but if not exercised or an eye kept on them they wil demolish anything! they also will also eat and eat and eat! doors, walls, beds, curtains Etc you get the drift!
G/S good dogs but as has been said they are not realy the dog for a first timer
here i mine its a Austalian Kelpie heis about the size and build of a small collie, he is a smart little bugger!! 6ft fences are nothing to him. he usually gets about 4-6miles exercise a day and still wants more!!
THINK VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE GETTING A DOG! as there are many who get them, then realize that they arn,t cut out for the cleaning up of Sh!t, Vets bills, chewed cables & furniture etc
also think about our neighbours! how would they feel if there was a hulking great German Sheperd howling and barking from the moment you left until you came back!
treat a dog right and i wil bcome part of the family, treat it wrong and it will end cause a lot of greif.
go luck
hope this hasn,t put you off as they are worth it

My mrs runs her own dog walking business now
Maybe you could find one in your area & have him/her walked during the day when you`re working
Jax only charges Ł4 for a half hour walk so not too heavy on your pocket
If you do go down this route make sure they are "fit" to do this though.
Jax spent 2 yrs at college studying animal care & behaviour & is insured to take client`s animals walking.

yup it is one very bored dog
we have tried to tell him but he thinks he knows best, having met the dog it is generally ok, i have looked after him a few times and is ok with us and our dogs
but he wanted a husky and his better half surprised him
to be honest i would rather take the dog from him and give it a good home

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers for us, great little dogs.
Best thing is they don't molt, just need a brush every week and a cut every other month.
As a pup

When mine was a pup, she wasn't left alone, but she still managed to chew things sneakily...
Just a few of the the long list....
2 x mobile phones
1 Armchair
3 x remote controls
1 nearly new Olympus digicamera
4 x mats
1 wooden patio set
2 x wooden fence panels
3 x garden hoses
2 x Hoselock guns
2 x plastic dog beds
2 x plastic water bowls
Numerous trainers/slippers/boots/socks etc
Destroyed loads of indestructable dog toys
