Cool! I had an Mi16 before the saph.
As for 10k for the engine? I sold the whole thing for a few hundred quid!
Wasnt a turbo though.

An MI16 is VERY different from a real T16!
Its an insult really to call a T16 an MI!
Its like looking at an RS500 and going "ooh, ive never seen a turbo XR4i before!"
They are mega rare, mega expensive, and mega cool.
In all seriousness they way better than their equivalent, a 4x4 Saff Cossie.

I was under the impression they were just a turbo version.
I think your RS500/XR4i comparison is a little unfair..
I would say it was more like a S1 RS Turbo / XR3i comparrison.

MI's were just basic quickish 4door cars, like an SRI Cavalier or similar, and the 4wd version was a bit of a mishmash.
TBH a 4i is more sporty.
T16s were built for the start in the same mould as Saff Cossies, but were made in mega low numbers.
Supersaloons, french persuit cops used em too.
They were generally accepted (tho never released in the UK) to be quicker and way better handling than a std 4x4 saff. 220bhp standard, but can be tuned to silly 600bhp+ sorta power like a YB.
IIRC the standard engine can do silly power, but never looked into it as obv they mega rare.
Variable geometry turbo as standard.
There was also the mental 2dr mid engine 405 T16 that competed in Paris-Dakar and Pikes Peak too.

"Built in the same mould as Saff Cossies"
What, you mean built from a Sapphire Ghia with a bodykit, 4x4 system and a specialist turbo engine?
Still sounds like a turbo MI16 to me.
The Cavalier SRi was more akin to the 405 SRi.
The MI16 was a Cavalier GSi rival.
As for the handling? Ive driven vans that out handle a Sapphire Cosworth!
A standard 1600 405 would out handle a Sapphire!
The 205 t16 was a wild animal of a car - so was the t16 rally car in your picture. But the 405 on ebay, although rare isnt all that special if you ask me.
Still cool though!

I dont know tech details, but engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, interior, etc is different to a MI16.
Just same as a 4x4 Saff Cossie is all different to I dunno, a GLSI or summat.
Same basic shell, and lots of bits could swap over, but to compare is daft.

I may be wrong, but as far as I know, the T16 engine in the 205 rally car is very different to the T16 engine in the 405 production car.
The way I saw it was that the 405 T16 was a turbocharged derivative of the Mi series, and the 205T16 was a bespoke unit for the rally cars.

Pon- IIRC both use the XU series block, but the 16v 205 T16 head is different to the MI, 405 T16, and 205 GTI heads.
Same as GrpB Reno5s use a GTT/Campus/340DL etc block, but a different head (tho the gordini used the same head)

MI16's are the only 405's over here. Guess kind of like the WRX is the only Impreza in the UK when back in their homeland, there is a full range of models. I know of 2 addresses with them and probably see 1 every couple of months on the road here.

almost as rare as rs200's then - a true understated classic, what was the 4x4 configuration like (ie mechanical : lsd's open, torsen, FF etc or electronic like the 4x4 vectras and calibras)

T16s are all turbod as standard, hence why they different to others 405s..
Not as rare as RS200? Bothered Nobodys comparing them to RS200s. 205 T16 was the RS200 equivalent.
And there cars a lot more rare than all of them.
