Default Whats the difference between a 4wd and 2wd beam?

Howdy fellow PFers

As some of you have seen (and a fair few are doing), I'm converting my car temporarily to 2wd

Anyone able to tell me the difference between a 2wd beam and a 4x4 one? Basically I want to use my 4x4 beam if poss, with a 2wd diff.

Need to know if I can do this? Not sure if my 4x4 diff is up to 450bhp +, so thinking of bunging a 2wd one in there if it can be done.

Basic gist is I want to convert to 2wd as cheap as poss, and leave as much 4*4 kit in place so I can go back as soon as the FIXIT is in place.

Cheers
Simon

4x4 beam is 7" and a 2wd is 7.5"

You can put a 4x4 diff in a 2wd beam but cant put a 2wd diff in a 4x4 beam

Si, They are different as the 2wd is wider to carry the 7.5 diff, shame it was'nt the other way

4wd diff should be ok ish for 450bhp as long as u don't lanch HARD!!!!!
You can have it uprated to save the hassel of changing beam!!!!

Think the shafts are also different sizes

Paul and Paul ( )

Thanks so much guys - both of you have cleared things up for me no end.

I'm getting a hell of shopping list together - this 2wd conversion is a little more involved than I first hoped (just thought I'd remove the front prop, job done (JOKE!!!)

From the sounds of things, I'm going to need 2wd shafts as well if I use a 2wd diff - anyone confirm what Paul (of the Costina variety) has said?

Paul of NYRS Spares fame - can you PM me a price for all the bits to do the swap if you have time? I've got a friend locally breaking a 2wd car, but always handy to have other options as we don't know about the condition of his diff at the mo.

I think I need a 2wd T5, prop, diff, beam, shafts and speedo cable so far!

Si

On a trackday your diff will be fine i reckon mate as you will only be at lowest in 2nd hear when you are flooring it and obvioulsy the gearbox is a torque divider the moment you change from 1st to 2nd.

And TBH if it does go pop, they arent exactly mega money to find again anyway, so i wouldnt bother with the hassle of swapping it personally as its only temporary.

Surely it's going to be so much easier to throw a cheap second hand 4x4 box in it and take it easy till you get your fixit!!

2wd conv seems a bit involved just for a temp measure.

Unless you really want to cane it

You taking it to the ring 2wd then??

"Si on a track" and "take it steady" just are NOT two things that go together!

well, I did hear the death rattle on the 205 when it was being parked up!!!

Just depends on how long the fixit takes to arrive/ save up for - seems a lot of kit/work just for a temp thing!!

going to be in the same situation too soon, already have one addition to my own mt75 gearbox graveyard in my back garden and a gt30 maybe on the way!!

have you not thought of the simple option?

how about just replacing it with a 2.0 DOHC MT75 and prop - turning ur car from 4x4 to RWD as a temp measure - should only cost you at most 50 quid - saving u the $$$'s for the FIXIT

But it doesnt have the strength of the T5 and will break as quickly as chucking another standard 4wd box at it.
