Default ROVER GEARBOX ADVICE.........

Hi guys ive got a 147k s/history rover 400 sdi 2.0 turbo diesel and the gearbox makes a slight rumbling sound but dissapears when the clutch is pushed in...ive been told it could be the thrust bearing???, ive had the car for 8 months and ive done 18k miles and the sound has always been there and hasnt got any worse, is the gearbox totally fooked or jst worn wear and ok to keep driving??? cheers all

I'm only playing

If you can hear a rattling noise and it dissapears when the clutch is depressed, its just the thrust bearing rattling around on the shaft.

Ive heard new cars do it. My cabby has had a clutch in and its done 3.5k, and has annoyingly enough done it from day one

Its usually nothing to worry about, just annoying to hear

If you have a spare why you worrying

Problem sounds like its not even inside the box - unless its a bearing.

Can't you drive everywhere with your foot pressing the clutch down all the time so its quiet

i think its the gearbox layshaft bearing...

thrust would normally rumble/squeal when pressing clutch.

its just a worn box, but if you have a spare, dont worry... could take months before it goes completely...
