spray painting people...........
Going to be spraying the bmw soon, and need to mask over various places.
I need to peel back and hold the windscreen and rear screen seals in place, masking tape won't be strong enough, gaffer tape will leave sticky residue
I've heard there is a special "hook tape" that is purpurse made for the job, but can't remember its propper name, can anyone help?

Can get tape that you slide behind the seal and pull back and tape down to hold it out of the way.

i've found the 3m windscreen masking tape, but its like 11 quid a roll , 15mm plastic edge that slides under the trim,and then a high adhesive tape that sticks to the screen

Get the glass out. Will make a MUCH better job when it's done. I've seen it when the glass has been left in and it looks tacky, the paint always ends up crack around the seal.

As siad, putting washing line (the thin nylon-coated stuff) under the rubber, and normal masking tape on the window and seal works well. It allows the spray to get underneath and comes out easily afterwards to give a nice finish when the rubber settles back down onto the paint - after it has hardened!

Paul, it's probably worth buying it mate, if it means the job is done right.

Gave the washing line trick a go earlier, but used some co-axial cable I have spare, stuffed it between the seal and the body and there is a good 10mm gap once the seal has been lifted to allow me to get the paint in and give it a nice finish

Radders - i'll be spraying within 2 to 3 weeks chap
If taking the seals out was only that easy
altho I can get A1 sheets of 100gsm paper from work, ideal for masking with and measuing cups too from the water dispensers

Paul - it is SOOOO easy to remove the screen from E30's intact, you'd be far better off just taking em out to paint. Mask the inside up with masking tape and a couple of layers of newspaper/brownpaper (shiney surface on brownpaper doesn't absorb paint as much as newspaper) and you'll be fine....
Taking the screens out of E30's is the same technique as doing a Mini - but FAR easier as it's nowhere near as tight. When we replace em, we have to be carefull not to sneeze - cos they'd just fall into place if you sneeze and the customer wouldn't be happy paying their Ł50 for a sneeze's worth of work

Good man!
To make life easier when you put it back in, get yourself one of these;
That will make putting the rubber strip back in the main rubber much MUCH easier (plus, keep greasing it up with WD40 aswell, as it helps nicely )
Just a quick note tho - it is NOT the type of screen that you put the rubber on the glass and then use string to fit it... Many people get this wrong! Escorts (mk3 + 4) are "string in" screens (rubber off car completely, fit to screen, then use string to get it in the car) and your Beemer is an "etch in" - pull the rubber insert out of the main runner trim, and you will be easily able to lift screen out. Leave main rubber on car, refit screen, then use this tool to insert the rubber insert.
