Default Traders Insurance,Help please

I,m opening a tuning shop soon and its just occured to me that i need to look at my car insurance I may have to drive customers cars sometimes so Traders Insurance may have to be the way to go........Except i dont really know anything about it. I currently have two policys ,one on my Cossie with Full NCB and one on my Escort Van with a year or so NCB. My wife also has loads of NCB on her Saab so what do i do ? I dont want to loose all that NCB and also if i have Traders Insurance does it cover me to drive my own cars for reasons other than business i.e if it gets nicked from outside the pub one night is it covered and if so for how much, retail value or trade ? Help please

Hi Gaz,

It's been a few years since we handled trade policies, but i'll help as best as I can.

Although you can cover your own (personal) car under a traders policy, this is only covered at Trade value - so youre probably better off keeping your personal policies separate.

When sourcing a traders policy, you will also need to be very specific what you are doing and that you're dealing with Modified & performance vehicles. As most basic traders policies do either exclude, or purely cover vehicles of this nature on a TPO (Third party only) cover basis.

For road-risks (road only & without premises) traders Insurance try either tradex or tradewise.

http://www.tradewiseinsurance.com/
http://www.tradexinsurance.co.uk/

These are specialist Insurers that purely cover Motor Trade clients and are used to handling policies of this nature.

From memory they can also cover your workshop, tools & liability for you as a 'package' if required.

Tradewise also used to "mirror" your NCB from your private car to the traders policy without you having to remove from your private car policy.

Anyway, Good luck with the new Tuning business mate

Kind regards

Tony

I have a trade policy through tradex. They are one of the few companies that insure cossies. They cover all cars exept jap imports which fall under 3rd party only cover, no theft......
It also doesnt matter if you have a standard car of a 600bhp monster, all you need is alarm/immobiliser and certificates. Its not that expensive if you put all you original policies together and look at the difference in price.

I have got a policy with tradewise as well and found them to be very good they will cover anything inc imports
Just make sure you tell the broker exactly what type of cars you will be driving as some companies wont cover imports/cossies
