The reason for them is because they are designed to appeal to your average lazy, fat ass American rural postal worker.
They drive on the right out there, but cars are left hand drive. So in order for a postie to stick the letters in your post box (or whatever those post box things on a pole are called) he would have to actually get out the car. Now we know that Americans don't like to do much walking, so this way, the postie can stay sat in their car, and post your mail in your box without excercising their fat arses.
