XR2i - clonk from the front when foot on clutch
I changed the track rod end as that was definitely knackered, but the clonk is too loud for that - when you pull away then put foot on clutch to change gear there is a loud clonk from the front end - have tried taking it to biting point and dumping the clutch with the handbrake on to get the engine to rock, but can't replicate the sound, engine mounts look ok - any other suggestions? Suppose have to get it in the air over the winter and have a good look (couldn't see anything obvious when laid underneath it)

Id of said try the gearbox mounts but you say they look alright is there any visable play in the steering rack if you get hold of the wheel and give it a good rocking ?

Didn't look! It's quite a loud metal clonk, just going to have to get back under and take some bits off, was thinking suspension, but made no noise at all when took it round Silverstone at Ford Fair

99.9% sure it will be the front wishbone bushes, they are always fucked, the other .1% could be front gearbox mount, they tear appart and allow the box to lift up

my mate had a nasty noise from the front of his 2i, same symtoms...
turned out to be the clutch cable where it meets the clutch arm. when its pulled, and its under a lot of tension remember, the nipple moved and sent a thud through the body
