Default 2wd modine pipes

I wonder if someone with a 2wd cossie could tell me where the water outlet pipe from the modine goes?

obviously, there is a feed to the modine unit from water temp sensor housing at the rear of the head but where does the other modine pipe go to and what route does the heated water from the modine take to the radiator?

One goes to the coolant temp sensor at the back of the head by the dip stick tube and the other goes to the heater matrix pipe (the bottom pipe of the heater matrix).

All from memory though so don’t shoot me down if wrong

thanks but what I'm really trying to establish is where abouts the water that leaves the modine re-enters the coollant system. does the water that flows through the modine travel through the rad (in which case it bypasses the thermostat and thus reduces the overall control the thermostat provides) or does it re-enter the system after the rad (for example just before the pump) in which case the modine water bypasses the rad and thus reduces the overall cooling capacity of the system as a whole?

hi,

its a kit car install with 2wd thermostat housing and pump. I'm not sure what is the correct routing of the water back into the cooling system after its been through the modine. if the modine returns to the top rad hose the water from the modine is not flowing through the thermostat and the engine takes ages to warm up and runs too cold but if modine's water returns to the small 16mm inlet on the pump (or the bottom rad hose) then the heated water from the modine is bypassing the rad and the engine runs hot when idling.

I’m no expert but all that is usually done is join the pipe from the modine that runs around the back of the engine and usually goes to the heater matrix, and then just join it to the stainless tube that runs to the water pump which then goes on to go through the radiator, I’m sure Rose motorsport used to do a hose for this!

You might have another issue if it’s over heating at idle, as I have done this in the past as a temporary fix when my heater matrix was leaking and had no issues whatsoever.

thanks for your help tosh.

i dont have a stainless tube running to the water pump! the water pump has a large inlet of about 38mm from the rad and a small inlet of 16mm. the modine has a 16mm hose. thermostat housing has two small steel pipes (about 8mm) and an outlet of 32mm and i have no heater. where *precisely* should the modine outlet connect to?

I don’t know if you can change round the oil modine inlet or outlet to help with your plumbing routes but I would presume so, maybe someone else could advise on that!

so as long as the modine to water temp sensor remain the same then all you need to do is run the other hose to the 16mm spigot on the water pump.

that's how it is currently connected. that means that prior to the thermostat opening, the pump will circulate water only on a loop from

- water pump 16mm small inlet - cylinder block - cylinder head temp sensor housing - modine - water pump 16mm small inlet (no water through the rad).

when the theormostat opens, the above loop still exists but we should also have a second water flow:

- water pump main inlet - block - head - thermostat - rad - water pump main inlet

but even though the thermostat has opened to direct hot water to the rad, the rad is 'short circuited' because the water returning from the modine is still re-entering the pump small inlet so there is no incentive for it to flow through the rad. this seems to be a particular issue at idle when there isn't much water flow. do we not need the water out of the modine returning to the cylinder-block-side of the thermostat and then forced to go though the thermostat and rad along with all other water?

I must be thick as I can’t see what the problem is then! If that’s how you have the modine plumbed in as said
Pipe from Modine to spigot above water temp sensor & pipe from Modine to the smaller pipe on water pump then it is correct.

All you are doing is bypassing the heater matrix and all the other plumbing should be as ford designed it?

Any more technical questions you will have to wait for another answer I’m afraid as I can’t get the gest to what you mean, of why it’s over heating if your plumbing is as stated.

Another quick search found the below info if any help
