cosworth clutch pedal

Got a strange issue hoping someone can help.

my clutch pedal is self releasing constantly. i know you have to pull the pedal upwards to release the ratchet but my pedal is sitting at its highest position constantly. it rathcets up, but every time i release pedal with anyhting other thatn ultimate care, it hits the release stop and releases the pawl. :wall:

basically with the clutch cable attached i can pull the cable at the gearbox without anyone pulling the pedal up as its already at the release position,. also without the cable attachced, the pedale stays at the highest position. im sure on my last cosworth without a cable attached the pedal springs to the floor. its as if theres a spring missing to keep the pedal away from the release position.

any help would be appreicated.

several things, mostly they will involve removing the pedal box

but that's going to be the easiest way to cross it off the list

the other thing might be the clutch itself

removing the box (pedal) is 3 nuts and 1 bolt

removing the box (gear) is probably much more of a ball ache

You might as well go the full hog and fit a Reyland hydraulic conversion and get a benefit from it.

had a decent look tonight and not 100% sure the pawl looks good. ive ordered a new rathet kit from ford. they offered white black and yellow, so went with what was already in which is white. knowing my luck it will be the wrong one

there are 4, depending on the clutch fitted

white, black, yellow and red

i would have though it would have been yellow but i've been known to be wrong in the past :cry::cry:

Mine was constantly self adjusting because the bracket at the end of the pedal box on the clutch pedal end that the pedal shaft goes into and the cable goes through had fractured meaning it was flexing, its a common fault iirc

Well done that man. Stripped the pedal box out of mine tonight and it was indeed cracked. not as bad as that picture though  anyway. strighten it and welded it and seems loads better. fitted a new racket and pawl while it was off and a genuine ford clutch cable. Clutch feels loads more precise. concerning that the ford cable both inner and outer were different than the aftermarket one i bought. didnt get round to driving it but feels instantly better.

Glad you got it sorted, I welded mine back together then got a new old stock one that popped up on eBay
