1984 Sierra - problems with windscreen wiper system
Hi,
I . I bought my 1984 Robin Hood Exmo - a kit-car with original donor car Ford Sierra 1984 1.6l Pinto - as an unfinished project which had failed its IVA test on many points including this one. I am now fixing the problems ready for retest.
2. The wiper motor fitted is likely to be a standard 1984 Sierra model as all other parts are from this one donor.
3, It only offers two settings - off and single speed. The IVA needs 2 speeds for a pass. I have just started investigating wiring / loom / Haynes Manual # 903, but things don't look promising.
4. Has anyone else had this problem? Can you confirm this wiper motor in fact offers two speeds? The Haynes Manual has next to nothing on this component apart from a confusing wiring diagram.
5. If anyone can explain how the wiper system works between switch and motor this would be a great help. I do not think my car has "intermittent" electronics - just the switch, loom and motor.
Thanks for you help in advance.

Have a look at the attached diagram.
When the wiper switch is moved to position 1 (slow), 12V is fed from the fuse to the switch (terminal 54), then via switch terminal 53 to the wiper motor (green wire in diagram)
When the motor is switched to position 2 (fast), 12V is fed from the fuse to the switch (terminal 54), then via switch terminal 53B to the wiper motor (red wire in diagram).
The switch terminal numbers are marked on the switch if you remove the connectors.
