cosworth oil
I have flushed the cheap oil that i put in after a freshen up and put in some MOBIL 1 10 / 60 from Matt Lewis.
the cars seems a bit noisy when cold from bottom end, quietens up as it gets warmer though. has anyone used this oil and has a similar problem. Cheers |
This oil is too "thick" and not necessary unless you are driving races every day.
Go for Mobil 1 5W-50 with short change intervalls and all will be fine. It's a very good alround oil. |
Thanks mate. Surprised as this is what was recommended. Ill look for some 5/50.

whats the spec of your car mines a 4x4 i used to use 15/50 but thats now a 10/50 when cold my tappets are a little noisey but when warm its quite mines a stage 3 greys?
|
10w is not too think lol un less you live in the North Pole 10w50 is the norm but a fair few do tend to use 10w60! There old engines 5w oil is for modern cars with very close tolerances
|
Car is a 2WD engine T34 siemens & harvey Gibbs chip, around 380bhp....
When i had the crap oil in 10/40 it was quiet as a mouse. 10/60 made the bottom end knock a bit but when reved was quiet. when the car warmed up it was fine. Thinking of putting the 10/50 but its hard to get, i know someone who runs the silkolene engine treatment with good results, but don't fancy going down that route |
Whys 10/50 so hard to get? Any good motor factors sells good oil like mobile 1 or if you won't the really good stuff order Titan on line lots of places sell it and it most likely cheaper on line any way
|
Thanks will take a look seen the Fusch po-s stuff, formerly silkolene

Oils are only too "thin" if the hot visco is reduced ..W-20 or ..W-30. A 0W-40 isn't "thinner" (mostly it is stronger) than a 10W-40, but the cold visco is much better so better protection from cold start (very important) but at hot temp. both are equal, so it's compared to a 5W-50 and 15W-50. A 5W-30 is thinner than a 5W-40. For me its more important cause I use my cars as a daily and all over 5W- cold visco is too thick for me........ and you know even on hot summer days it is always a cold start for your engine. |
Mine was 500+ bhp built by the best yb engine builder m.a.d that was ran on Titan 10w50 as recommended lol the book may say 5w but no one uses 5w as it's regarded as too thin for an old pinto lol even the oil man who sells oil recommends 10w50 or 10w60
A 10w oil protects a car down too -20 it don't get that cold in the uk! The 50 weight gives it a little more protection when the oil is up too temp as it's a little thicker than the 40 these are old engines thin oil just leaks out or burns off lol |
I was recommended by nms to use millers cfs 10/60 the engine is a lot quieter and hardly uses any
|
Oil only leaks out, if your seals and gaskets are worn (or any other leakage). a healthy good sealed engine doesn't leak oil out lol, not even cooling water leaks out lol how can oil leaks out if both are ..-W50 at hot visco? :wall: :DD: A difference of 5 or 10 sec. in oil lubrication from cold start is hugely for a long time.

No wonder most cossie engines are worn, why not a 50W-80 engine oil:tiff: We are talking little weeps. It's each to there own the guy can iver use what 95% use or recommend or do as you say lol |
Nice one, you quoted my pre-edited thread :D
What I meant to say is, that many people say a 5W-50 or 0W-40 is too thin, but recommend a moment later a 10W-50 or 10W-40 and this is utter absurd.... Don't get me wrong, no offence meant. ;-) |
