I think the fuel sender unit is shot on the 3dr, fuel gauge doesn't get above the top of the red even when the tank is full, question is do I have to drop the tank to get to the sender unit or is there an easier way?

Yep you've gotta drop the tank to take the sender out.
Not a really a hard job, easier if you haven't got much fuel to drain out.
