Hi,

Can anyone help with the routing of the 4x4 clutch cable. I'm trying to fit a new one but can't get any tension. The ratchet / pawl appear to be fine and the only thin I can think of is the routing of the cale is wrong.

Photos would be appreciated. Before removing the engine it has tensioned with tie wraps.

This is the last thing I need to do before booking an MOT and I'm stumped!

Routing wont give you any more tension.

Is it on correctly at the gearbox end? Is it the correct cable?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply. I have pushed it through the hole in the gearbox end and it is still located there. The cable is a 4x4 one I bought from MSD and it arrived today.

When the cable is pushed through the bulkhead I attached it to the clutch pedal then attempted to tension it by holding the pedal up as far as it will go then pushed the toothed wheel back. It clicks for a couple of pumps of the pedal, tensions but the gear will not select. When I pump again the tension releases.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Sorry if I've misread your post , but is it attached to the clutch fork?

By the clutch fork you mean the metal sticking out the end of the gearbox casing with the hole cut in it to accept the cable? If so yes I attached the cable to this first.

Cool..Been years since I've worked on a Sierra so struggling to remember if there's any way you could get the cable through the bulkhead on the pedal end, leaving it with too much slack in the cable? I have vague recollection some Fords the cable went around the ratchet, but some just hook into it from above.

edit -I always used to connect pedal end first, then gearbox after.

Check to see if the cable can be routed differently through the bulkhead around the ratchet matey.

I've fitted it to the top of the ratchet. I'll see if I can route it around the ratchet and see if it makes any difference.

Cable also passes through the bell housing have you done that?

No I haven't mate. I've attached the end of the cable to the fork sticking out of the bell housing and left it there.

Thanks a million. I've just put the cable through the bell housing and 10 minutes later it's working a treat. If your down in Devon anytime I owe you a pint.

A little story about my car with regards to the clutch cable bought a replacement box from ford and Sheady fitted it into the car, went to fit the clutch cable and when he went to fit it into the lug on the bell housing, the lug wasn't there ford had reconned a box with a broken lug but it wasn't noticeable as the bell housing was clean

wasn't funny at the time though as box had to come back out again, note to ones self before fitting gearboxes make sure that lug is in place
