Silkolene PRO S 10w50 without a doubt, great stuff,if you have nosiy tappets it will quieten it down a bit plus you will get better oil pressure reading over other oils.
Silkolene is the way to go,not cheap but u get what u pay for.

Gotta disagree on some of that from my findings.. millers 10w 60 or castrol edge 10w 60 keep much better pressure, silkolene seemed good enough but just doesnt last long at all before degrading and the pressure starts to drop.

mechanic28 12-12-2009 01:00 PM

have been thinking about using that oil,but i get the mobil one stuff quite cheap £33 for 5 litres!only problem is with the big wing sump it takes more then this now

I understand what u r saying but SILKOLENE keep it's viscosity at higher temperatures where some other oils lose their viscosity far quicker,Castrol being one of them.
I cannot comment on the Millers but I have heard it's good stuff.

Doug,Mobil 1 was yet another oil to lose it's viscosity at high temperatures.

really?would not of thought that tbh,but then again i aint really looked into it!i presume you mean using it hard on tracks etc,i have always used it and never had any problems with it?

Doug,I saw a test done on quite a few synthetic oils last year, can't remember where I saw it now.I'm not knocking Mobil 1 or any other oil, just feeding back the results of the tests that were carried out at the time.
Doug,I have used mobil 1 in the past aswell, the loss of viscosity does occur at high temperatures as u say more likely 2 be the case on track when u r constanly hammering it but don't forget these cars run at very hot temperatures anyway(road use),just some food for thought fella.

We generally recommend the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 but there are others to look at. Motul 300v, Gulf Competition, Redline or Millers but we dont agree with 10w-60 unless oil temps are extreme.

Cheers

TORCO full synthetic 5W/50 top oil but expensive!!!

sundera86 14-12-2009 11:54 AM

yacco galaxie 15w50 competition

The Castrol also expands at high temps, as the molecules "unwind". Therefore in a Cossie (which doesn't like being over-filled), you will "appear" to get high oil consumption if you fill it up to the top level, as when it gets hot, it will go over the level and then get blown out the breather system. When it then cools, you have "used" a lot more than normal...

Silkolene for me, as in Rod's car (200mph) it showed NO chemical breakdown at all after a high speed run (where the same could not have been said of the others, which had sheared and lost a lot of their protective properties ;)).

tabetha 14-12-2009 02:56 PM

Best I have ever used was/is SUNOCO RACING 20W50, REDLINE would be my 2nd choice.
The cossie doesn't run any hotter, but does have less oil than a lot of other engines so has to transfer same heat with less oil, not forgetting oil does at least as much cooling as the water cooling system.

20w lol do u have too starter motors to turn that over when the outside temp is in the minuses that is one very thick oil in the cold

oilman 08-02-2010 11:09 AM

And it takes so long to get around the engine when it's cold, go for a 10w-50 or 15w-50

Been really pleased with the silco myself... refitting the big wing sump so will be in for more soon ;-)

I run a little less - 437bhp at the wheels and have been very happy with it ;-)

what with a 20w rateing? u do know the 20w is the winter rateing i.e how thick it will be when cold 20 is far to high lol
