Thanks for the reply...........

Was a little worried I'd be dragging the Gearbox back out after 6 months. I'm looking for some reliability so thought this would be the way to go without braking the bank ?

i would use the money elsewhere; just get a standard t5 and get it rebuilt for peace of mind.

plus t5's are easy to change; box out, clutch, and box in within 2 hours easy!

Matt,

Difficulty engaging gears.........think it's down to worn selector forks etc.

Cheers again............

as with anything thats old you can experience worn selector forks. I have seen cossies suffer from these.

if you want to fit a gearbox which you will never have to take out again then you want a tko600 gearbox, but they arent cheap!

it all comes down to budget mate; personally i'd get a t5 rebuilt by someone with a decent reputation stick some gear oil in as opposed to ATF and see how it goes

You can, later tips(fork ends) are plastic but can be upgraded to brass, the early ones were made of PAPER, well a form of compressed card, these were attacked by std ATF, FORD atf was a slightly different brew.
ATF is in a lot of box builders opinions too slippery, you MUST have friction for the synchros to be able to work well.
A good mod when getting boxes built imo is the fitting of a drain plug, never been a fan of 20+ year old oils!!

A well built T5 is pretty bullet proof, wont struggle in your car.

you will find cold gear changes more difficult, but it will offer better protection when temps are higher

Default t5 box

i took most of the teeth off 3rd gear in my standard box and the bearings sounded shot that was with about 35obhp and around the same torque i took my box to cts and had the big tooth kit fitted with uprated bearings and standard forks the car now has about 500bhp and about the same torque hasent given me no trouble yet that was about 3 years ago also mad ade has the same gearbox with a hell of a lot more power than me

I run the Glebe dog box, bit pricey but i run over 600 bhp through it and 436 lbft, noisey and crunchy for a road car but it certainly takes the abuse. i smashed up several standard T5 that were rebuilt by Philip Peacock (Mountune reccomended)
The main advantage is you can never beat the syncro, exagerated on my car due to a very short gear lever, nothing more frustrating than trying to shove it in to 3rd quickly and hitting a brick wall. You can also shift like a motor bike, just lift a little on the throttle and bang it in to the next gear without using the cluth (i have stoped doing this on mine as with the power i run i totaly destroyed my diff)

You would have to shorten down the propshaft and mount a new yoke included with the tko. A new clutch is also required as the input shaft got different splines aswell.
