Fao cosworth box and clutch guru's!!

my cossy has a knocking coming from the clutch or gearbox when the clutch is not pressed to the floor, when the clutch is pressed to the floor the knocking goes,at 1st i thought it was the engine, but its defo clutch or box, question is witch one?
clutch is a alcon paddle clutch, not showing signs of usual wear i.e high biting point or slipping etc,but its the 1st time ive had 1 of thse clutches so does it just go or will it show signs?

gearbox is a rebuilt jobbie according to the history, rebuit a year ago, selcts gears very well, nice and tight, and looks brand new under the car aswell.

any ideas what could be at fault? hoping clutch because its cheaper or could it be a bearing in the clutch, lay bearing or summat iirc?

any help appreciated:top:

edited to add the car was in neutral when we discovered the knocking,in gear it goes when clutch down but cant hear it because of exhaust and engine when clutch is up and car in gear.

free bump for me

well i had the same symptoms on my mk1 escort and it was the thrust bearing.

Mine does it. It's deffo the thrust bearing.

I have been told by loads of people you can change it and 400 miles down the road it can happen again.

The thrust bearing is not available by itself, it comes with the full clutch and it's not worth changing that alone as it's a gearbox out job.

Noisy release bearings are very common, and normally go on for years, only ever had one explode, that was on my high performance metro HLE, due to 43bhp not being handled well by the box!!
