Head Bolts...
Yesterday i fitted a new head gasket to the saff, and obviously new bolts.
i used the following sequence;
stage 1 - 25nm
stage 2 - 50nm
stage 3 90 degree rotation
stage 4 - 110nm
I am now worried that the bolts may not be tight enough as on the final stage it did not take 90 degrees to make the 110nm.
Is 110nm bottom limit for the required torque?
Really worried about this now!
Any help most appreciated.

I had read on previous posts that you do a final check for 110nm, i thought it may be a good idea to torque to that in the 4th stage rather than do the second 90 degree rotation to avoid over stretching the bolts.
But now, i beginning to think that bolts are supposed to be tightened up past the 110nm mark when using the rotation method, and the final check ensures the bolts have not been stretched beyond their yield zone.
Cheers.

120lb ft sounds too much for standards bolts, could someone give me a figure for standard bolts rather than the rotation method as i dont feel that method is easily acheived accurately with just a torque wrench.
Cheers.

what i have done is;
25nm
50nm
one rotation of 90 degrees
Then set torque wrench to 110nm and tightened all until it clicked.
I remember a couple of them already being 110nm when i went round so moved on, now im beginning to think i may have to buy new bolts and do it again! id rather do this if my method is not acceptable.
I beleive the final 90 degrees would torque the bolts further than 110nm!

I am not confident of the setting of my head bolts so have decided to replace them. I will use the mentioned method of tightening when i make my next attempt.
I will not be replacing the gasket though, i will replace each bolt in sequence.
I presume when replacing each bolt, i take that bolt through all 4 stages of tightening, then i move to the next one....?
Cheers.

No i havnt put any fluids in it yet, im kind of halfway through upgrading to stage 3, i am fitting t34, rs500 cooler, greens, in addition to that, am fitting full roose hose kit, new radiator, bailey breather system new gaskets pretty much all round, putting the head back on was kind of the first step to rebuilding, it was removed to renew gasket to group a, as i did not know what gasket was currently fitted. I did not want to remove all the parts again due to me blowing out a standard gasket because it could not handle the power!
Cheers.
Cheers.
