Default Mk1 Vs. Mk2 Steering rack Interchange?

Does the steering rack from a Mk2 car have the same configuration as a Mk1? We can limit the conversation to 2WD platform; no 4x4's in the States, at least not imported by Ford.

The end-goal here is to be able to use a LHD manual Mk2 rack in a 3-door Merkur XR4Ti (Sierra Xr4i equivalent, for the most part).

If not a bolt-in swap, is it close enough to be do-able? We've done some nutty things over here like fitting a manual Pontiac Fierro rack, so a Sapphire rack might be easier, even if it's not plug-n-play.

Appreciate any input.
