My three door has done 85k miles and normal stage 1 mods.

I was wondering what everyones views were on oil? I noticed in my copy of the ford workshop manual they recommend 20w 50??????????

Currently on mobil 1, what should i be using ?

Mobil 1 Motorsport 15/50 or Castrol RS 10/60. These are the best.

I use Castrol 10/60, thats only cos it's cheaper, well at the shows anyway!

Ł20 a litre normally.

I've used Millers CFS 10w 60 fully synthetic competition oil in my 4x4 saf cossie for the last four years without any problems, it was suggested to me by a friend of a friend who uses it in his Escort cosworth rally car, its surprisingly cheap for a motorsport inspired oil at only Ł25 for 5 litres and is excellent value for money compared to Mobil 1 who charge Ł32 for four litres, when it takes 4.5 litres to do an oil change (The words RIP and OFF spring to mind......)

15w/50 mobil motorsport mate, i take the previous point about it only being sold in 4 litres, but it costs at the most Ł50 to do an oil change, costs around Ł 4k to rebuild an engine, personally i never take the risk, never let the level get low and change every 3k.

These engines are basically racing engines and are designed to consume oil (up to 1 litre every 600 miles) !!! as stated in the workshop manual, and that's a standard motor !!!

never used castrol before but once you've starting using one oil and had good results why change !!!!

My YB only uses about a pint for every thousand miles and its a stage 1 4x4, so regardless of what the manual says any car of mine that used a litre every 600 miles would be sold sharpish.
I dont doubt that every one of the oils mentioned are quality lubricants and well capable of keeping a YB in top condition, but just because something is more expensive doesn't necessarily make it better. You say your not willing to take the risk, what risk ? Do you really think that because something is packaged properly and priced competitively that it is inferior to more expensive alternatives, not everything in RS land is so black and white.
As i said before the millers oil was suggested by a privateer who has run his big power rally-spec Escort Cosworth on it for a number of years with no problems as yet, and i have used it for 4 years so far ...without the need for a 4K rebuild!!!...... The fact that it is so cheap is just a bonus as far as i am concerned

Just don't use thin oils, mobile 1 0w-30, won't lubricate the internals.

So am I right in thinking that the 20W 50 recommended by Ford in 1986 isn't used now because of the availability of synthetics and generally better oil technology?

i think your missing the point cornish pixie.

I'm not saying that your chosen oil isn't up to the job, what i'm saying is that it is widely recongised that mobil 1 (as well as others) is the oil of choice !!!

you say your stuff is cheap and that's a bonus, if cost cutting is your thing then a cosworths not really the motor for you !!!

your right in that cheapo oil wont bring about a costly rebuild straight away, but it will certainly bring it on sooner than good oil.

What a load of rubbish m8 ,I can see that you are one of the large group of RS owners who have , over the years , made motorfactors the rich people they are today. If millers oil is priced at Ł25 for 5 litres and mobil 1 is priced at Ł32 for 4 litres then neither are "cheapo" oils, it just means that come service time, The engineering firm i buy from get Ł25 from me , whilst Halfords get Ł64 from you, they are both fully synthetic motorsport competition oils tested on the track and engineered to protect high performance turbo-charged engines, so ask yourself ....Why did you have to pay almost three times the price, i'll tell you , because Mobil 1 only sell in 4 litre quantities and you needed 4.5 litres to oil change your cossie so you had to buy 2 cans. Now ask yourself , Does Mobil motorsport not know that cossies rquire 4.5 litres......of course they do, thats why they only produce in 4 litres, they want you to have to buy 2 cans hence my original RIP and OFF comment. So spare me any more ill informed and mis-quoted replies about cost-cutting,cheapo oils and costly rebuilds and i'll not mention sayings like "a fool and his money.........."

Has someone put dodgy marks on your dipstick m8, you should not be putting 4.5 L in on a change, if you use the manual it will tell you it will take 3L or 3.4L if you doing a filter change too and the initial fill from a new or rebuilt engine is 3.8L, so A 4L can is perfect. I personally agree with cossiep about spending just a bit more to put your mind at ease.

Miller's oils are very high quality. Just because they are cheaper than Mobil/Castrol doesn't mean a poorer oil.
Don't equate cheap with low quality.

PS I have a one pound coin you can have for fiver if you like

Thats fine if you run a 2WD Saf , if you look at my previous posting i have a 4x4 and if you check Fords own Workshop manual , Volume 2, page 0990 section 21B-3 , Under 4x4 Engine Lubrication: Initial Fill Capacity- 4.75 litres........Oil Change (Excluding Filter)- 3.7litres.......Oil Change (Including Filter)- 4.2 litres . Allow for a little spillage if your ham-fisted like me and there's your 4.5 litres. It pays to read every post before you wade in to a conversation with facts and figures that dont relate to whats being discussed......

Fair enough, didn't notice you had 4x4, my mistake but why are these facts and figures not related, the amount of oil in the mobil1 cans was what was being discussed, and if i remember brought up by yourself!

Indeed it was, I only raised the point to highlight the fact that 4x4 owners are somewhat penalised come service time in regards to Mobil 1 , Perhaps i should have worded myself better, as you rightly point out though 4 litres is sufficient for the earlier cars and funnily enough for the later Escorts (Wonder why the 4x4's are different ) Anyway Cossiep seemed to see this as an opportunity to suggest that if pennypinching was my thing then perhaps cosworths were not for me, Saving money had sod all to do with it, Theres a huge difference between intentionally scrimping on servicing to save a few pounds....and finding myself a suitable alternative( That just happens to be competitively priced !!!!) That more suits the requirements of the car i happen to drive, but he obviously missed that point altogether.
