i have changed my oil pressure sensor today because i thought it was that.

i upgraded to a 25 psi motorsport item.

initially when you start the vehicle the comes on and goes off but after 3 - 5 seconds it comes back on and won't go off!

i'm worried - is it time for a new oil pump? do they go often?

mileage is 95000.

i would say its a crank clearance issue worn bearings etc as oil pumps produce flow not pressure, its the clearance of the bearings and gallerys that keep the pressure up, is the pressure good when cold and then low when hot if so bottom end rebuild time it is.

somethings wrong mate at idle when cold i got 75 psi and when at 80 c i got 27 psi. light would prob come on at idle when hot on standard old engine but should go straight out when reved.

i am using castrol rs oil and i have recently put in an additive to restore engine performance.

it is called restore - anyone heard of it?

could it be that the additive has blocked up the oil filter?

i have heard of these problems before.

at the moment oil light stays on when cold and warm!

any suggestions!!!

You are using CASTROL RS, and wonder why you have problems with oil pressure.
SHITE OIL = CRAP PRESSURE.

when my oil pressure dropped i wasnt to bothered as i was taking the engine out anyway when i stripped it i found the big ends to be totally shagged and a scored crank!!!! personally i would neva put a additive in my oil and only eva use mobil1 15 50 motorsport oil. when cold i have just under 60psi of pressure when cruising at 70 with oil temp around 60 deg i have around 45 psi at idle on a well hammered day it sits around 20 psi and picks up at slightest rev. this is on a standard oil pump as well...... personally id say its rebuild time especially with the mileage

If light flickered under hard cornering, it is pick up was getting out of oil, so sucking air, and dropping pressure, use a higher level, or baffled sump.
Castrol RS did not do well on a mega test in the states, but not as bad as mobil 1 did!!
I use when I can get it SUNOCO RACING 20/50, but if not any at mo as my engine needs a new bottom end.
If an engine oil(above) is seeing only 60C I would be concerned it is too cold to work properly, my xr4i used to see cruising 90/100C, up to 130C when ragging it.

Nothing wrong with Castrol RS in my opinion. My dads always used it in has westfield (for about 18 years) and always been fine. I also use it in my cossie and I think its better than mobile 1 on a high mileage engine.

I trust scientific tests done over 4 years and on over 100 vehicles of all types, more than anyone's opinion.
The test involved over 1/2 a million miles engines in trucks as well as taxis, new stuff old stuff changed oils unchanged oils etc.
Basically results were piss poor for castrol that lost it's viscosity as soon as it got hot, and did NOT regain it, same with moby 1.
I have used both, and would never use either again, but castrol, rs was a complete joke with oil pressure when under pressure.

so after all this, what would people recommend i do?

it doesn't smoke, rattle or bang and the oil light has started coming on?

i need some suggestions to fix the problem!

Run a gauge to it (sender location) if you can find one. That way you'll know a pressure reading for sure and take the guessing out of it all. Also check wiring isn't worn and touching something else too. Its a really thin wire. Maybe disconnect the sender and see if there is a light at any point as that would prove it to be a wiring fault.

Thats all I can think of really.

i have a oil pressure gauge and i see around 57 psi cold with mobil 1.in the line going to the gauge there are some air bubbles,will this affect the reading?

for someone who does post some good points,, you also come out with some complete shit./ post in a pretty derogatory way,

LOTS of people use that oil (not me ) with no problems. IF HE KNEW IT WAS SHIT he wouldnt use it, im sure.

it dont matter WHAT oil he is using, if the light is on at all, there is a problem.
(especially when cold ) that is BEFORE the oil/engine comes under any pressure.

most likely to be worn bearings and oil pump mate, although 95k isnt mega mega milage,
but if something has got into the system then it could well of damaged the bearings.

try fresh oil, with no addetive HTH

the first thing to check is the actual pressure switch
put a new switch in there to eradicate te issue of the switch being at fault

then make sure you run a new wire to eliminate a possible break and and earth giving yo these sypmtoms

then stick in some regular oil, find that opie oils chap and see if there is a recommended oil for older engined cossies if you want some technical info on it

the ford oil pressure switch will come on at between 4 and 7psi and is more of a "your engine is fooked, get it sorted" rather than "your pressure isn't as high as it should be, get it looked at"

once you have done this and the light stays on then its time to pull the engine out

but you could be looking at an oil pump or a whole engine rebuild, but better not to run the engine for making it worse than carrying on and hoping for the best

As I stated my dad has always used castrol RS for 18 years and had no probs in a highly tuned westfield pinto. This was the only oil to give good pressure at hgih temps when used hard. It gave me great oil pressure even when used hard in my cossie and I won't be using anything else. I appreciate that oil pressure is not as important as throughput of oil etc etc etc but I can only tell you my experiences. Why not try it as its not much for the cost of a few litres.
