Default Front strut top mounts

Currently replacing the front suspension bushes and am puzzled as to the removal of the front strut to replace the top mounts. I assume it's possible to lower the strut down sufficiently to remove the rubber mount but cannot quite work out how to do it.

Any help appreciated.

Hi mate, you need to open up (slightly) the top of the hub where the strut sits (using an old screwdriver for example) and is clamped by a bolt (which you have undone of course), lower the hub assembly either by levering it down or as I do buy first removing the anti roll bar mount to make it easier. Base of the strut might need a light tap to free it - use a mallet or something for that imo.

There are a few variations to this but whatever you decide the hub needs to come down low enough to pull the base of the strut out of it.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that. I was afraid that I would have to remove the ARB as I've only just replaced it complete with the new bushes. Skinned knucles aplenty again methinks.

ARB's easy to put in, just use a strap.
Aneasier way to open the knuckle up is to insert the bolt the other way so it goes in the threaded part first, then put a washer in the slit between the bolt and other part of knuckle, this will then spread it out, and hold it there.

as long as you remember to leave the top nut on the strut to take the weight it won't be a problem

Thanks for the replies chaps. Not quite sure I follow but I'm sure it will become apparent.

Regarding the ARB, I replaced one on my Mk2 RS2 about a zillion years ago using the old strap trick but it didn't quite have the girth of this ARB so I was a little taken aback at just how much tension I had to apply to make it fit. Plenty of creaking and groaning....and that was just me.
