Cheap enough from your local factors on an exchange basis to not even bother with a DIY repair imo....I bought a new one just because I couldnt be arsed to paint the old one to match my tarts handbag of an engine bay

There were either 2wd or 4wd cossie starters, that's it.

LoL, thanks to Tabetha my repair job needed only emery paper and WD40, things don't get cheaper than that

To strip down, replace all old parts with new, and zinc plate the various visual parts that are required to give a as new finish tend to work out a little more expensive than emery paper and wd40 As I said, mine worked fine I just seem to have a spending fetish come once a month, normaly the day after payday before the missus gets hold of it all

Well, it was the calling card you left in the phone box that started it all!

The point is you will very likely NOT need to replace all those parts, some just need a gentle cut, maybe even brushes.
The last one I did I did not have any brushes so it is running on old HOTPOINT WASHING MACHINE BRUSHES, cut and shaped to fit now, well over a year now!!

Are the original Bosch items still available, or any other aftermarket alternators?

I would prefer a new one and not a reconditioned one. Had loads of bad luck with these!!!

Yes there's a knack to it. You turn it upside down, you have all 4 springs poking out the side, one at a time you raise the housing where the spring is and poke it in, then the next, then the next etc.

It's easy, it took me 2 maybe 3 attempts. One spring is harder than the others due to the position of the cable, do this one first.

Just have a good look at things and you'll see it's do-able.

EDIT: forgot to say, when you turn it upside down, the weight is on the shaft at the bottom, this pushes the housing up inside, making it easier. So be sure that you're balancing the weight on the central shaft, this pushes the assembly up on the inside and makes it all possible.

Somebody needs to take some pics and do a guide, it'll save so many people so much money. I have a starter to do yet, as my spare, I'll take pics when I do it, later this week perhaps.

Dont think so mate...if you find one it'll probably carry a premium. My recon jobby has been perfect and was under £40 exchange.
