Default puma 4x4 cosworth build

hello all im new here im about to start my first build and obviously have some concerns

the plan:

ford puma body
xr4x4(sierra) brakes,suspension, basically the 4x4 system
and to use a cossie engine

will this work or is it a silly idea , i know some people done the puma body over a escort 4x4 drivetrain and engine but prices for them these days are thru the roof , is there much work done to the body for this to fit or is there a easier/better way to achieve this?

any help will be muchly appreciated again i am a novice atm

thanks

Hi mate, I am not far from you, I have a pug 205 with 4x4 cossie under it, the car was converted by Djm so feel free to come and look to see how it was done. There is a converted puma on here too and that has cos 4x4 too, local to us as well.

Coley on here has a good thread on his focus build and that will show how to solve a lot of problems

I can put mine up on the ramps to show you.

It can be done and needn't be that hard to do, the main bits you will need are the gearbox tunnel from the 4x4 and the rear beam etc (you may want to consider a 6 degree beam from the start ?- depends on budget) You will need the front cross member from the 4x4 and then fabricate in the bottom of the chassis to locate the cross member.

Prop shafts can be bespoke from the place I got mine done near Heathrow -prop shaft services.

You will need to decide on bladed anti roll bar OR just use the 4x4 anti roll bar (I have one that you can have) the 4x4 one helps locate the track control arms on the front.

I love the cossie lump and all the nostalgia that goes with it but would also consider other options such as Duratec or even go for a full Mistsubishi Evo setup as per the 205 that Dimma recently built as they have much stronger 4x4 set up and are far more plentiful.

You can get 300bhp out of a Duratec quite cheaply under normal aspiration.

thanks for the reply , i was consindering a duratec as you said they can make power fairly cheaply and it does sound like a fair bit of money/work to do the job i intended to do. my main intention for the car is fast road car /something unique my buddy has a mk5 fiesta zs with a 1.7 puma lump and its bloody nippy , your car sounds lovely i do love the 205 , was considering getting one and doing the 2.0mit (could be wrong here) swap but know next to nothing about pugs so stuck with what i know ford , that would be great to come have a look to see how youve done it one day

No probs, I also have a 205 with 2.0 16v out of a gti6, that is a very easy swap to do.

Let me know when you want to come and see it, bring a camera and take a load of pics on how to solve stuff. I will post a link to my thread on here.

Thanks I had seen that thread but because it started with a different username didn't think it was yours so didn't look into it.
