Cool Ford Puma Brakes

Ladies and Gents,

I appreciate there are probably tonnes of threads here re brake recommendations but I am selfish and looking to get some first hand answers.

I purchased a Puma to use for a bit of spinting on a budget. I am wondering what the latest recommendation for brakes would be without changing the current wheel or going too silly with hub modification etc?

I have seen Fiesta ST suggested and others saying that standard disk (larger size, its a W reg) along with top pads (not sure which) with a good fluid will suit.

TIA

Stu

i used mk3 mondeo callipers and st170 discs on mine.

you have to drill the hub bolt holes out to 13mm and shave a slight bit off the callipers top and bottom, but they are pretty brutal now.

i also dont have any fancy pads in them, just what came already in the callipers so with a decent set of pads you can have a rather cheap brake upgrade.

as for fluid i used castrol srf stuff.

Thanks for that. I was wondering if anything would do without drilling and modifying what is there. Do you find the braking force on what you have excessive or just enough?

How do you mean 'pretty brutal'? Difficult to modify?

If your putting them under 15" then you'll have to grind the calipers if you use 16" and over then they will go strait on but you will have yo drill the hubs. If you look on eBay my brother sells the complete kit on there with what ever disc and pad combo you require and includes the calipers ground down as well

Fiesta ST calipers and discs (280mm) are the biggest Ford ones you can fit without having to drill the hub bolt holes out.

Thanks for help chaps. Do you have a link to ebay page?

Anyone with experience of fitting these? How have you found the ST ones? I am sure anything would be an improvement from the current shite!

the std puma brakes are piss!

of course you can never have too much braking force, but they seem to do the job. i tracked my puma at combe last year on the rs day and the brakes were well up to the job, just a shame the car was so slow lol

as for what i mean being brutal, when i first fitted them i kept stamping on the brakes and getting the abs cutting in all the time as the original ones were so poor i had to stamp on the pedal, but now im used to them its all ok lol. but they do pull up well if you need them to.

the st170 disc is 300mm and to fit them under the std puma wheels a bit of the calliper needs to be ground off on the top and bottom edges, you will see whats needed when trying to fit the wheels.

also you will have to have the wheel weights on the back of the spokes etc as there is not enough room on the inner part of the wheel.

the std hubs are easy enough to come by as they are the same as a mk3 fez, so drilling the bolt holes out wont be much of an issue should you want to refit the original ones for some reason and need new hubs.

Same wheels i had on mine mate. you will need to grind a bit off the top and bottom of the calliper to get the wheels on, but it is well worth it!

yes to the above parts mk3 mondeo callipers and pads, st170 discs. i would also hange the brake fluid while doing it.

as for the abs, yes that still works.

Fiesta st setup is the only setup that will fit without changing any.
Pros there focus st170 caiplers so lots of pads and there a direct fitment and will fit under stock 15s.
Cons there the most costly setup and thay run 20mm smaller discs.

mondeo/focus setup. second bigest conversion you can get cheap does need work to hubs and caiplers if you want to run oem 15s.
Pros Cheap to get hold of and good braking and lots of pad choice if you use focus one.
Cons you have to redrill the hub holes out to 12mm and you will have to grind the caiplers down if you want them to fit under 15" oem wheels.

So you want to say that if i want to put Focus st170 calipers and 300mm focus st 170 discs i dont need to drill the hole and dont need to grind the calipers?

I think that ppl put mk3 mondeo calipers because are bigger and stronger.

ST170 calipers are more expensive then mk3 mondeo. I find mk3 calipers (2pcs) for 40e.

But st170 are more expensive and u cant find it easy like mk3 mondeo one...

But if you do drill the hubs, puma hubs can be had for peanuts if for some reason you ever want to put the standard brakes back on.

So cant see why you wont go for mondeo callipers..

Not the best pic

No focus st and fiesta st use the same caiplers but use diffrent size carriers so thay will fit the diffrent size discs, As for grinding the calipers the focus st calipers dont need as much grinding as the mondeo items.

No its just because you can pick up mondeo calipers for £20 to £30 a set where focus st ones are £50 to £80 a set.

good point on sleeving the holes!!

ok, in my pic above its mk3 mondeo callipers and pads, drilled hubs and focus st170 front discs.

the braking performance was very good, i was using the pads that were in the callipers and took the puma round castle combe for the rs day a few years ago, i got in 7 sessions and not once had any brake fade, and outbraked a few cars.

i paid £30 for the callipers and already had the discs/brake fluid. so for me was a very cheap and very effective brake upgrade.

Im sure the calipers are all the same. I bloody hope so lol.

Do you have to grind much off the calipers to get the srandard wheels to fit.

Just a bit of the top and bottom edge really. I fitted the callipers then tried to fit the wheels and removed as necessary.

Just rake the corner off really

Rear discs are just for looks and you have to turn them down so much thay barly touch the discs, Just upgrade your std wheel cyclinders to granada ones and thay will be better without wasting time and money.

Ive got rear disc conversion and i went out and Spent £150 renewing my rear drums instead of just fitting the discs.

Fitment on most fords are the same you just have to get the ones that match your base plate, I picked up two bolt type granada wheel cylinders which iirc are 2mm or 3mm bigger than fiesta wheel cylinders. iirc fiesta are either 16mm or 17mm where granada ones are 19mm. Iirc thay was granada non abs wheel cylind3rs.
