Mondeo TDCi playing up

Thought id ask on here for a neighbour who has a 05 reg Mondeo TDCi (mk3)

First thing when he goes to use it to take kids to school, he turns ignition on, glowplug light illuminates, goes out and then the car starts as per normal with no issues. Moments later, within 30 seconds to a minute as its ticking over the engine dies for no reason. He then has a orange/red cog on the dash, the glowplug light flashing, and the engine managment light come on. Car won't start for around 5 minutes, then it will start fine but you have to keep the revs up for a moment or it will die again, if you hold the revs up for a minute it then behaves as normal, doesnt die again and he can use it for the rest of the day, turn it off and on again etc like theres nothing wrong... until its sat over night and he goes to use it again the following day he has to go through it again :?

is it leaking fuel at all

louis_2012 12-03-2014 11:30 PM

Nope, Car is pretty mint and well looked after by him, its done 162,000 miles though but has full history and has always had anything it needed, this is the first time its played tricks in the 5 years he has had it he tells me.

It might be the fuel pump????

Yeah not sure I did think that, sounds rough as hell when its cold but once its warm its fine. Id never own a car powered by one of those engines !

they are shit . i have 1 which is playing up too . looking at various sites they seem to suffer with numerous fueling issues , injectors etc . i got to admit its the worst car i have ever owned and will be getting crushed shortly

It is strange. He services it every 10k regardless of use and its well maintained. Spoke to him tonight and he swears the engine noise has got louder too. Glowplug light on them doesnt just mean glowplugs, it could be fuel pump, injectors, even things like crank/cam sensor. Money pits, it fogs the whole car park out with bluey smoke when he starts it even though it had a re con turbo about 10k ago..

glow plug light acts as fault code light too . plug it into code reader to see what comes up . normally around 100 k injectors start failing . early models suffered with pumps failing inside , due to rollers breaking up , them swarf entering injectors and then them going too . recon injectors are hit and miss , best to buy new from delphi direct as cheaper than ford at around 300 quid each .be warned . people have thrown 1000s pounds at these things and never be right . put it through the crusher . be cheaper in the long run .

We have a fleet of trannys at work and I will be totaly honest with you all. The engines have been bloody spot on and we havent done much to them at all.
