The engine is already designed with mpg, reliability and smoothness in mind. Nothing you can do will really improve that apart from service it regularly with quality parts.

Would better quality parts help? i got wacked with a Ł750 bill in Jan 17 for Cambelt,Water pump,Cam belt tensioner and Full service, this is on top of Ł150 for MOT + Coil pack replacement in Dec 16, I have a suspicion that "basic" parts have been put in..... or maybe im being paranoid, Ive seen on other threads that some people have put NGK Iridium Spark Plugs and conical air filters on which has improved MPG/Smoothness, Its a family car thats used for commuting so im not bothered about faster acceleration etc just about keeping it reliable as im the only driver in our family.

Thanks for your help so far

Always use genuine ignition parts, zetecs have never liked aftermarket plugs/leads in my opinion. Get yourself onto eBay where you can pick up genuine parts etc. I use opie oils for my oils/filters as they only sell quality stuff. Look in the traders section on here and they occasionally put up discount codes.

Cone filters do nothing on an N/A engine apart from make noise and suck in hot air out of the engine bay, the standard air box is best.

Hi and welcome.
Please be careful if you are planning any engine mods as unless they are like for like replacements then you would probably have to disclose these to your insurer.
Regards,
Dan.
