Default ST170 Engine rattle

Morning all! Hope you had good weekends! I recently bought a 2002 Focus ST170.
The exhaust was rattling like crazy so i swapped out for a mongoose cat-back and toyo sports manifold and decat. However now it’s worse and sounds like an engine noise, the engine was quite tappy before and still is but runs and drives mint. I haven’t ran it on the road at all since fitting the new manifold because of the rattle getting a lot worse.

any help would be greatly appreciated, I will post a video later on today for anyone interested.
Kind regards,
Jamie Allan.

the dual mass and vvt can cause lots of rattle on these cars thats if the rattle is not from core of engine itself, I break 170s all the the time and most common causes are normally the dual mass and vvt, and this is normally main reason I break them when people see a bill for a dual mass and clutch kit for around £500 and the vvt pulley and solonoid £250+ thats parts only no labor, normally why these cars sell cheap on the 2nd hand market

Thanks for your reply mate. Sorry I took so long to reply though. That’s great info appreciate it, so you think new clutch and flywheel, VVT Pulley and solenoid should sort it? The clutch feels good and the flywheel doesn’t rattle on startup. The rattle was not there before I changed the manifold however I noticed my dipstick has snapped, so I removed the sump and found a snapped drill bit and a small sleeve in the bottom of the sump. There’s also a snapped mani bolt on one side of the exhaust manifold but it must of been like that on the old one also.

My dual mass rattled for 5 years of owning my ST170, it never slipped or broke, despite being used daily to and from work, and hooned at the weekend
What's the oil like, and what weight are you using ? also have you checked the heat shield on the manifold, as well as the cat heat shield ?

Daaamn man 5 years on the same dual mass is bloody good going! Haha, The oil was fine it was only changed about a month ago before the manifold was fitted and It’s about to get changed again since the sump is off. Did you see the bit where I found a snapped drill bit and sleeve in the bottom of the sump? 😂 what do you mean about weight? Yeah the heat shields where rattling like crazy when they were on but non existent anymore haha, it’s only been since the manifold was fitted so I’m pretty stumped!

Running 5W30 oil, the last service a few weeks back I was told to use 10w40 with some lifted fluid to try solve the tapping notice but had little to no effect. Now that’s all flushed I will be using 5W30 again. Il post a video once she’s running again if it’s still rattling lol.

cheers for all your reply’s

5w 30 is a good starting point, try and make sure the spec is the same as Ford's, as a good oil pays in the long run, although I know you that already.
