Default Is the ST170 not 170 bhp from factory?

I bought a cheap ST170 with a few electrical niggles. Guy i got it off didnt know anything about cars and handed me a messy binbag of paperwork. Its became apparent that the car has had a bluefin remap? a miltek full stainless exhaust, piper camshaft exhaust pulley, bigger throttle body and a pipercross filter, its been to pumaspeed for something and there is a print out but it is only 163.4 BHP ?

I thought if they were 170 standard with those mods it would be at least 185bhp ?

strange.

Should be 170bhp, but i bet most of them left the factory with much less.

Isnt the Variable Valve timing supposed to be weak? I heard the system ALWAYS fails leaving the car with about 145ish BHP.

i was always told that on average they put out 150-155 as standard.

am sure the remap removes the problem flat spot

I went to a RR day a few years ago and there were a few there, they were putting out on average 155-160bhp standard. None will make the quoted 170bhp although dyno figures on the day will always vary.

Later ones were nearer the actual power. Early ones were a bit hit and miss.
They're not slow revving they're tall geared hence the 8sec 0-60. They come into their own through the box, 2nd - 4th.
VVT isn't the weak link the inlet manifold runner control is, the brushes fail inside or the clip to move the cable snaps.
Remap lift the rev limit slightly iirc and wont actually improve the power to any note but will make it much more driveable.
Sticky throttle - add it to the list of niggles! We've had ours 7 years and its got/had every single one of the common issues!

Mine only gets sticky throttle in very cold weather, but after about 10mins driving it eases up and doesn't stick any more. I havnt had mine dyno-d but it's 04 plate, and I think it's one of the good ones, it's quick, and very fun, also doesn't seem to have the stutter at 2k rpm like most do. I've fitted a vernier pulley set to -6 degrees to the exhaust cam, under 4.5k you don't really notice any difference, but after that it feels quicker.

I bought a 3dr ST170 on a 54 plate last week for Ł650. At first i eas sceptacle about the price, having put it through its paces id say it was around 170bhp, no flat spots, no hesitation, pulls especially well at 5k rpm and so far only the clutch master cylinder has gone (which is a well known fault) replaced it myself and wallah its good again! All in all a good family motor

Nice. Sounds a lucky find! Mine was Ł800 and in great nick considering it had sat doing nothing for most of a year. My only issues are it needing the cambelt doing and an annoying collant leak I cant find!

I too have a very slight leak of coolant, its dripping underneath tbe car right where the bell.h
bell.housing meets tbe block, ive traced it back to the thermostat area briefly so will.investigate further when i get a day off :-D not sure if thats a common fault... all in all im very happy with it

common water fail points is either o ring or the actual thermostat housing itself

Will be the thermostat housing or o ring.
Housing is(certainly used to be) a ford only part. It's specific to the car apparently.
will leak but if it's hot it dries on the bellhousing so it's not as easy to spot straight away.

i think you're right. She's in the garage for a cambelt in a couple weeks so I'll have them sort it along with a new clutch master cylinder (also leaking!).

I do believe the quoted power is without the ancillaries, like a lot of other car makers. That reduces actual horse power after installing it in the car.
