Default slight Knock when releasing clutch in reverse

Hi
I have a 55 plate focus, when I release the clutch pedal slightly quicker than normal when in gear, there is sometimes a slight knock coming from the front. usually when in reverse and even rarer in first. When I try again to make it happen it won't! its seems worse when reversing up hill. Garage checked under the car and CV joints, droplinks etc are good. Or should there be some play before drive is taken up, if I do everything gently there is no knock.
Garage said is could be the pads knocking the disc when the when the wheel has suddenly changed direction from forward to reverse. Clutch works fine and no unusual whine noises.
