Default ST170 Xenons onto Focus RS

big job, or straight forward?

i undertstand the indicators will become redundant, but wondering what sort of wiring was involved, what HID bulbs the standard focus xenon lights used?

anyone done this, or fitted any sort of different lamps on their FRS, i remember rob (SCC) had some different lights on his focus, but cant remember where they came from?

reason i ask is i have seen some after market HID kits fitted to standard lights, and they look good, but the beam pattern is shocking, and the ST170 has the proper projector lamps etc

It can be done without much hassle. The wiring isn't much different (if at all) and it's fairly easy to find somewhere to mount the ballasts for them (although you may be a bit tighter for space with it being an RS. It's been done a few times before on a 'normal' Focus so I can't see the RS being any different. To be completely legal you'll need to fit lamp washers (which would mean cutting into your RS bumper) but I think most lads don't bother

Only problem is the grey area about self levelling suspension which is required with HIDs. The grey area being it applies to cars which leave the factory with HIDs but doesn't cover aftermarket HID conversions............so do you (from a legal perspective) class retrofitting Ford's HID headlamp system to a car that didn't have them when it left the factory as a retro fit (because it didn't leave the factory with them) or standard fit (because they came off a car that DID leave the factory with them).

I don't know anyone who's had bother with these points though. So long as they work and the beams are aligned alright you should be fine. Sourcing the light units tends to be the biggest problem as HIDs were an option on both the ST170 and the Ghia so there ain't many of them about!

so you all bought the lamps from the ghia/st170 and fitted HID's?

whats the going rate for a decnt pair of these lamps, i take it they are hugely expensive from ford?

the main beam isnt HID is it, its the same as normal?

For reference:
It is illegal to just add a HiD kit to your existing Headlamp assembly because it has not been designed for this purpose.

If you plan to upgrade to HiD then you will need an approved headlamp assembly replacement which is designed for HiD style lighting.

For more information please see this government website:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps
http://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?t=659

Part of it states:
2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.
But there are HiD equiped cars from the factory without that so it probably isn't that stringently enforced.

Should be fine
