Yeah you will be ok doing this. I presume this is an Escort? If it is, you will be fine.
Gasket sealant and gasket is needed and you might as well put a new thermostat in.

It's not a difficult job to do.
Luckily Ford sell the gasket/rubber o-ring on its own now so it'll only cost a couple of quid instead of about Ł75 (or whatever stupid price is it!) for a complete new thermostat!
Drain your coolant then I 'think' there are 3 bolts holding the thermostat onto the side of the block, change the o-ring over then refit........you might find it easier to remove the coolant pipes (as you've drained all the fluid anyway) but you should be able to do it with them connected.
Then just refill and circulate to make sure you don't get any air pockets!

i would replace the termostat houseing also as it is not always just the rubber seal have done many of these on normal focus 2.0lts and it is easier to replace the front housing and stat with new gasket all in one.
the 3 srews are normaly torx and very easy to strip so just buy 3 new ones.
hope this helps

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Yes i would repalce the whole lot, most times it still leaks
At least if you do this its a defo that it will be fixed and will save draining coolant etc etc a few times and should see a couple of years use before it does it again
