Best way to wire an amp/amp-live feed
Hi
My brother has a mk1 focus and he just got a sub with an amp on it and had read the best way to get a live feed from the battery through to the boot is removing the front passenger side wheel and drilling a hole. Then put the cable through the newly created hole and so on,is this really the best and quickest way as it's so far a pain in the arse lol. Any help appreciated. Cheers. |
In my personal opinion, yes that is the best way, as long as you go through in the Ford recommended location, and not through under the bulkhead connector (straight into the main harness   ).
However many, many Focus owners ( FFOC How To ) route along the wing mounting flange on the passenger side to the A pillar. There is a blanking grommet above the hinges which the cable can go through into the cabin. This obviously is quicker and easier than a drilled hole. The required bends in the cable are a bit tight (no that doesn't restrict the electrical current) which is why I don't like it......but nobody has reported troubles with this install. Martin |
Why drill a hole when you could go with the second option!? It just makes another place it could go rusty!

If you route the cable from the battery, behind the airbox and into the wheel arch there's little or nothing for the cable to catch on, rub on or generally get fucked on. So long as you drill the hole in thebulkhead in the right place there won't be a problem (I've got personal experience of someone getting it wrong and going through the main wiring harness into the fuse box!!! ) if you run it up along to the wing you've gotta go from the battery and do a 180 degree to go inside the wing (which is fucking sharp metal), you can't really see inside the arch to get it to the grommet (which will be fucking sharp) to get into the wheel arch area unless you replace with the correct sized grommet and then, if you don't get the clearances right, you'll catch it in the door and hinge AND you've gotta try and route the cable from behind the dashboard instead of by the fusebox to get it into the car. The wheel arch is the 'better' of the routes but it's more effort. Choice is yours if you want to be gash or not..............secure the cable and protect it enough (the wings are only thin metal so they are bloody sharp as a result!) then you can get away with going through the wing but it's not the way I'd do it personally! |
drill a hole on the bulkhead...its what i did and makes life easy...just remember to paint over the bare metal and use a gromit and you will be ok :top:

Ford (America) instructions including anticorrosion and location.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/martin....khead_Hole.gif I always offer to drill this hole when changing springs as Its far easier to do with the strut removed. ;) Martin. |
