Default Intermittent engine management light on Focus TDCI 1.8

As per thread title, my mk1 Focus TDCI 1.8 Engine Management Light comes on now and again. The car is used every day, and the light comes on, usually briefly, about once a fortnight.

There is no pattern – sometimes it comes on when starting from cold and sometimes when the car is fully warmed up during a 30 minute journey. If it does comes on it’s usually for only a few seconds and then goes out again. Also, the dashboard warning light is often very faint or flickering and not a full strength glow, which seems a bit strange.

Six months ago the car had a new fuel filter and an injector leak test – all OK. Car had new glow plugs a few months ago too, although cold starting is not the best but I’m not sure why. Car pulls well, turbo boosts as it should, no smoke, no noises.

Other than getting it plugged up at a garage in the new year, any ideas?
