Question TDCi 1.6 Turbo charger

I've been having some trouble with my Ford C-Max 1.6 TDCi, so I took it to the Ford dealer (who had done a service on it only a couple of weeks before), who told me that the turbo charger is damaged.

Looking at various motoring sites on the internet, this appears to be a common problem with this model/engine (although at 6 years old, I can't imagine Ford will offer any warranty work on this).

The Ford dealer tells me it will cost € 2,400 to repair, plus or minus, depending on how it turns out.

Given that the car is worth € 5,000-6,000, I can't justify the cost and thought it might be more cost effective to get a remanufactured turbo fitted at an independent garage.

However, looking at some of the information on the internet, the procedure looks very particular and I'm not sure a smaller workshop will have the knowledge required to do it.

Has anyone here had a successful solution to this problem?

Any guidance/advice/shared experience most gratefully received.
