Default Another tdci turbo failure

My mate has an 03 focus 1.8 tdci and last night the turbo packed in. He's been told off the aa that when a turbo goes on a focus tdci it sends filing all around the engine which you struggle to get out and when you fit a new turbo it will only last a few miles and then the filings re enter the turbo recking it again and he's been told hes better to get a complete engine and a new turbo. Being a mechanic iam finding this hard to believe but thought I'd ask you guy (the experts). Cheers.

Never heard anything like this before !

My mate is mechanic for the Police and has worked on hundreds of desiel Focus's and as a result he's replaced a fair few turbo's and I have never heard him or anyone else mention anything of the sort ! When changing a turbo it is wise to clean everything out as they can end up running on the engine oil which results in it getting drawn through the intercooler ect.

I have changed some turbos on this engines, and this has never been a problem. It is a lot more then just the turbo, who been changed when we use Ford`s descriptions. The smal oil filter in oil feed banjo, is one wery impotant thing, who have to been changed

My mate got a recon turbo/manifold yesterday and spent today fitting it, started up fine ran for a few minutes stationary then he noticed oil dripping out the exhaust, dipped it and it's ate all the oil. He's going to take the pipe off in the morning and check to see if there's any movement in it, the only thing I can think of is a dodgey seal within the recon unit. Anyone had anything like this before?

Could be exactly what you've said, a seal simply isn't sealing and the result is oil leaks through and gets burnt as well as the fuel. I would advise caution as they can start to rev like mad as a result of being fed the engine oil !

Unbelievably, I was told it was the turbo..... guess what, on inspection the fuel filter hadn't been changed since it's first service, yet the garage had charged for filters on each service, this was at nearly 80k miles! Fuel filter swapped, away I went!

I'm shocked at how many times I've been hearing things like the above lately and some people still think a dealer service history is worth the extra money

The saga continues.. He returned the turbo as faulty and got a replacement unit which is now fitted starts an runs ok on the drive but as soon as he drives it when it boosts it's total smokey even to the point someone's complained and the police came and knocked on the door this morning. I thought it was mebies just the oil in the exhaust but he's unsure. Any ideas

It could be that so the best thing is to keep a close eye on the oil level and check around and under the engine bay as often as you can !

He took it for a good blast today and the smoke has cleared. So much for the turbo place saying there was nothing wrong with the one he returned under warranty after fitting it and it spewing the oil out. There obviously was.

That is the first time I've ever heard anything like that and I know someone who due to the fact the cars he works on are so heavily abused is fitting turbo's on a regular basis and after 8 years in that job and working on TDCI's he's never had that once. Instead of telling him to scrap it perhaps he should have been told to take it to someone who knows how to correctly carry out the work.

Your statement from Ford and my experience with them just about sums up the knowledge (or lack of !) that some of their employees have. There is no reason what so ever to expect further related problems from a car that has had turbo correctly replaced, unless of course who ever carried out the work just treated the symptom and not the cause !

But what a disappoitment these Focus. I changed the turbos on both my Focus and my brother at 75k. The thing is that I had to change the whole complete unit so you have to pay for the manifold and actuator but I ask why???? I had a mk3 fiesta which I fitted a mondeo turbo intercooler on the standard 1.8 engine and when it went I just made a kit and used the same turbo. On my mk4 Escort 1.6 diesel I fitted a P100 turbo and run 1.5 bar boost for 5 years everyday and never had any problems ( I bought the turbo 2nd hand) Now I have this Focus TDCi 03 Ghia. I love it but it is giving me hard time with sensors. As I said I changed the turbo at 75 k. But I suspect that the turbos are failing because the oil is not being changing very often. On the FSH showed that the oil has been changed every 10,000/ 12,000 miles. God knows what type of oil had been used. Now I am using MPM Fully sythentic oil 10/30 and change it every 4000miles which I make every sixs months in Malta, so I hope I don't get to change the turbo again!!!!
