Default Ford Escort Mk4/Orion heater problem

Hi guys, been out in the Orion these past few days, and noticed the hot air isn't blowing out HOT air...its just lukewarm...the blower itself works fine, and the temp adjusts as normal, but when its in the max hot position, it used to be way hotter than it is currently blowing...

Around 3months ago we did a full coolant change so I don't think there is an air lock in the system, as from memory, this has happened gradually

Another note, around a year ago, a brand new matrix was put in, again, blowing out piping hot air

Any pointers for me to check out this weekend?

Cheers!

What’s the temperature gauge reading?

Airlocks
Head gasket
Thermostat
Water pump

Hey man, temp gauge usually sits just under the M up to the R on the gauge

I did notice the other day after being stuck in traffic for about 30-45 mind, the reading went up towards N and then the air got nice and hot...maybe the engine just ain’t getting hot enough in this cold weather?

In that case I’d try putting a new thermostat in...
probably worth putting a new fan switch in so it’s kicking in at the right temperature...
Just give it a good flush out with the hose when dumping the coolant

Yeah think ill have to, forgot to mention its also got a new thermostat....fan switch I'm guessing is OK as the fan comes in/out as normal...its just the air isn't overly hot circulating in the car...

I think ill give it another flush through and see if that helps...if not then I am just going to accept its not getting hot enough for it to be acceptable for me lol

On the flip side, its only another 2-3 weeks until the engine comes out...im sure I can hold on for a little longer

Worth trying another new stat...
Does it warm up holding the revs up? Could be water pump...
Just block the radiator at the front with some tin foil over some cardboard

Yeah I may try a new stat if I have nothing to do this weekend...I have a few laying around!

The temp goes up as normal really...and doesn't get high up unless sitting in traffic for quite a while (standstill on the M25 for half hour on a HOT day, 20-25degrees upwards for example), but standstill on a day like today (10 degrees), it doesn't overheat when in traffic either

Looking at the header tank, water seems to be circulating freely too

TBH, once the engine conversion is done, ill see if the 'issue' is still there...hopefully its all good...and like I said, maybe its just me being me and liking the air to be hotter than the matrix can give in this temperature

Think I have got to the bottom of it...I think the engine is just not getting hot enough...

When driving, the temp is sitting around the M mark, so around 1/4...the air comes out warm

When sitting in traffic or when the temp goes up, to around the N-O mark, which is around 1/2 and a bit over, the air gets hot to what I think it should be

Ill live with it for another week as next weekend I should start pulling the engine out!
