Hi Mat on my series one I owned years ago there was a cold start valve on the rear upper part of the inlet manifold. My car used to start better when this plug was disconnected, iirc it pumps extra fuel in for 9 seconds

Cheers

Lazy starter motor? They usually get fried by the downpipe if the heatshield is missing

When my S1 was nearly new it went to Trimoco, Dunstable for poor cold starting. They were the No 1 Rs Dealer at the time and they contacted Ford who said to disconnect the cold start valve. The instructions then passed to me were to cold start the car with the throttle peddle depressed about half way. Started really well for the next 25 years until we parted company. Sad day.

Try it it might help.
Cheers, John

I had this problem on my last escort. I changed the starter and found it solved the problem. I then wrapped it so it didn't get too hot as they can stick after a hard drive.

If the engine is turning over but struggle to start.. you will find the fuel mixture needs adjusting most probably. If you had a start motor issue, the engine won't turn at all

Great, did the same myself last spring and it always starts on the button. Don't forget, wrap the downpipe
