What alternator?
The XR3i is back on the road for another summer of fun. But, the alternator is whining plus now and again the alternator sounds like a bag of spanners.
After I killed my original Alternator, I had 2 QX Components branded ones: one was doa; the other died within a day. The next one I had was QH and that one lasted a good few years, but still only about 5k miles.
My question is: what brand alternator are the ones to look for and at what current rating?
Cheers,
Lee

I tended to go through alternators fairly quickly. Currently running a Lucas 70amp and its doing the job and stood up to a couple of years so far with no issues

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
id be on the lookout for a bosch or lucas unit, even if knackered have it rebuilt.
firm in dorking will rebuild any alternator same day for usually about 100 +vat

Lucas on my S2, fitted early 2007 as the factory fit one has knackered...granted it had been sat in a barn for some time. I've only drove the car no more than 8,000 miles since I bought the car in Dec 2006. The alternator is still strong. I run it with roughly 10mm slack on the aux belt.

Thanks lads, I thought Bosch/Lucas may be the answer. I'll have to take a look for one.
You say 10mm slack, 10mm up and down travel on the belt in total? Should add I run a Sierra ribbed belt.
And I'm running EFi with an MFi pump, so 70A+ will be required?

I've upgraded mine from a 70amp to a 90amp due to the sound system I have installed, been on the car for about 10 years now and still going, not sure what brand though
