Default recognize noisy or bad tappet

My car started to make some noise from a tappet. Just random when warm. it comes and goes.

I had some other tappets, so i took out all the tappets. Checked which onces where still moving and placed all movings back in.

Car is still the same, so maybe i placed the bad tappet back in, but how can i recognize the bad one? It's only one that does it and i think its a shame to switch to all new onces

Anybody an idea?

I've been putting so much money in this car i'm kinda fed up of it. I have a bunch of tappets laying around. With the little work it is too swap them i think i am gonna search for a set that does not rattle and doesn't have any wear. If i can't find a set all new onces will go in, but being located in the Netherlands they aren't as cheap its €160, rather keep it in the bank at the moment

haha tell me about it. Shitty thing got a full resto and alll the parts that are old keep breaking down haha. Feels like i am building a brand new one

Gonna try an additive for the hydraulic lifters altho i am not a fan of them myself, but some ppl recomended that. After that one more swap for a good set and if thats not the solving thing i am gonna order a new set

Hello Red,

Sad to hear about the noisy lifter.
When you did the engine rebuild did you use an old camshaft and lifters?

Cheers

Was under the notion that the cam and lifters had to be run in together?
I had a lifter spring fail and ruined a lovely fresh engine, after rebuilding it I had a new Piper cam and lifters fitted. One of the lifters hadn't been hardened and ruined the cam before it had even left the garage
Quality control seems sadly lacking on the cam/lifters front these days.

Cam and lifters should be changed at the same time, I would only use a Newman kit these days.

I have heard the same. But as its a Pipercam which is expensive i am willing to try it with new lifters. Gonna take the risk. Found that lifters at Burton are cheaper!

When i rebuild the engine the cam was measured and all lifters were good.

I know putting everything fresh in is better

The cam will be work hardened and the lifters will be soft, but the risk of course is up to you mate.

I am in a similar situation with a tappy cvh! its done 1500 ish miles with a kent cvh35 which i fitted with new lifters, i have learnt from this don't use cheap lifters as its lunched the cam the one thing i did notice is i replaced a couple of the lifters right from the start due to a misfire. (hindsight says i should have changed the lot) as the two cam lobes that had ford lifters in them are fine, the rest are worn!
