Default Fuel pump relay on Series1

Do they get warm when in use and what are they symptons of one failing? Do they just stop working or do they die a slow death?

As said it's a common problem for them to fail, however do not be tempted just to replace with a switch as it will not be able to handle the power the pump draws hence why a relay was used in the first place, also if you were to have a crash the fuel pump would not stop as I am pretty sure they do not have inertia switches where as when the engine stops the pump stops as well on the standard setup!

There is a thread on Seriesoneturbo.co.uk on how to wire in a seperate relay to take the load off the original relay and put it on a new automotive standard relay. The fuel pump relay is then only handling 250ma instead of about 18a whilst retaining standard functionality and operation.

Mine started clicking and the car cutting out, turn off the ignition and restarts, so have changed the relay for a spare need to go out testing to see if its cured.

Are they expensive to buy then and whats special about them other than being unique to the S1?

I think the "Special" bit unique on these is that the relay contains a timer for priming if not done by ECU, I have never owned one of these cars so don't quote me on this by any means.
