Default HELP AE piston rings???? wtf do i do with these!

Right, this is probably going to have a simple answer and i will feel a fool!

These are my new ae piston rings, all have good gaps in bores (the actual rings) but i have no idea what to do with the oil control rings

Its like they are too long.... (the separator bit), i have never seen this type before and have used the ones which hook over the end or have a gap.

Should i shorten these? or are the ends supposed to but up to one another and provide extra tension to the scraper rings?

The pics on the packets dont really help as they show a gap ,

The ends are ground very square, i just don't know if i should cut them down or not. They physically go on the piston, and i suspect would go into the bore, just seam far too stiff fitted.

Hope some one has used this type.

Rob,

Cheers for the reply mate, its bugging me because rings 1 and 2 have a perfect gap out the box, the oil scraper rings have a good gap too, its just this expander piece don't know if the ends should butt up or if there should be a gap

After some searching it looks like the ends should butt and force the scraper rings out, its just when i did this it felt like it was forcing the scraper rings out with too much force??

I was flying up until the rings lol, mains are all measured and in, piston clearance is all measured and good, just need to put the rings in and bolt the lot up,

Cheers for the replys lads, just talking about the 3 piece oil control rings, the upper and lower scraper rings have the correct gap, the spring part in the picture doesn't I don't know if I have to cut it to make the gap or if it's the correct length and the ends butt upto each other, if that makes sense? The small amount of info and pics on the net seem to hint at no gap on the spring part, urgggg just don't want to bugger it and strip it back down

Cheers mate, the two pics contradict each other a bit tho, the first one shows the staggered but the second shows the 180deg round?

Never been this confused about rings lol why couldn't they just be normal!

no thats right rob, the spring of it takes up any expansion needed, they need to touch ends to have a spring effect to push the scraper rings out hope this helps m8

Hahaha, i might take you up on that! I've done a few engines now (no cvh's) but never used this type of oil control ring and just threw me.

I'll take a few pics when i put the rings on this evening,

LOL, well, piston rings on tonight, final clean and plastigauge. Torque up big ends and mains, fit main seal and oil pump... sump on.

Booked friday and monday off work, so lsd goes in gearbox on friday, MAYBE engine and box in on sat and on the floor by sunday????

Just leaves me to wire every thing up and install the pump/tank properly.

Possibly soon lol, I HOPE.

Was going to PM you anyhow Karl, see how you were doing with the GF's Ka and to ask you if a normal type 3 legged puller will get 5th gear off???

Sounds good Rob, not long now!
Ka project is cancelled and up for sale (engine already gone just Ka left), split up with the GF a few weeks back.
No you wont get 5th gear off with any sort of puller other than the proper one unless the box has done 100000000000 miles in which case it might just come off by hand
I have managed it once with heat, big bar, big hammer and a 3 leg puller ground to fit 5th gear but it took hours and destroyed the puller so I bought the proper tool from th USA knowing I would be doing it many more times.

Where did you buy the puller from karlos ? I made myself one before but if the proper ones cheap enough it would be a worthy investment

Cheers mark.
