I had same fault two years ago and it resulted to be a relay. It`s a black relay in the main fuse box. It`s under the bonnet.
I think it`s the relé marked with VI (six) in the board. Haynes lists it as ignition switch. Mine it`s an mk2 orion, but I think it`s same as the escort.

Is this the mk4 rs turbo? which relay did you check? as there are 2 yellow relays in the fuse box 1 for horn and 1 for indicators and lights.
nearest to inner wing is indicators i think.

This sounds a lot like what happened to mine. I'd lost loads of stuff too, heaters, windows etc. When testing the ignition I got 12v in position 1 and then nothing at 2????. Further investigation found a whole bunch of melted wires in the loom. Could of been a nasty fire so it's worth having a good look around in my experience and not jump straight to relays. Oh and I had no warning smells before hand.
